Job Description

Title: Director of Evangelization and Catechesis
Date: February 8th, 2024
FLSA Status: exempt, salary
Reports to: Pastor
Collaborates with: Middle School Religion Teacher, 2nd Grade Teacher, and Director of Liturgy and Music.
Schedule: Full-time, 40+ hours per week, 12 months per year. Frequent evenings and weekends required.

Job Purpose: The Director of Evangelization and Catechesis assists the pastor in calling and forming disciples. The Director collaborates with volunteer leaders and all staff in order to evangelize Holy Spirit's parishioners and school families, to evangelize our local community, and to provide catechesis at all age levels.

General Responsibilities: Employment in and by the church is substantially different from secular employment. Church employees must conduct themselves in a manner which is consistent with and supportive of the mission and purpose of the Church. Their public behavior must not violate the faith, morals or laws of the Church or the Archdiocese, such that it can embarrass the Church or give rise to scandal. In addition, the nature of this position requires that the employee demonstrate an articulate and energetic endorsement of the mission, purpose, principles, and values of the Catholic Church in general and Catholic education.

Responsibilities

Adult Evangelization and Catechesis
1. Adult Evangelization
o Be present frequently at Sunday Liturgies.
o Be present at parish and school events to build relationships with
adults in our community.
o Lead the Synod Evangelization Team efforts to implement the
Synod Implementation Plan.
2. Adult Formation
o Coordinate the parish's ongoing adult discipleship immersion in
partnership with the Pastor, staff, and parish leaders.
o Coordinate parish adult formation events, retreats, and small
group opportunities.
3. Order of Christian Initiation of Adults (OCIA)
o Develop, implement, and oversee OCIA.
o Collaborate with Pastor and Director of Liturgy and Music to plan
the various liturgical rites required for OCIA.
o Develop and form the OCIA core team (catechists, sponsors,
volunteers).

Children - Grades Pre-Kindergarten to 8
1. Coordinate parish catechetical programs for young children, with
emphasis on family formation, discipleship, and prayer.
2. Evaluate curricula as needed each year.
3. Supervise Volunteer Faith Formation Coordinator (our small Faith
Formation program is run by a volunteer that this position supports;
your presence is not required at all Faith Formation events).
4. Assist Volunteer Faith Formation Coordinator to recruit and
supervise catechists, volunteers, drivers, etc.
5. Partner with parents/guardians regarding program goals and
content, calendar dates, involvement opportunities, expectations,
and family enrichment resources.
6. Aid in the orientation, preparation, collection of resource materials
and ongoing enrichment of catechists and volunteers.

Sacramental Preparation for First Reconciliation and First Eucharist
(2nd grade)
1. Oversee Sacramental Preparation in collaboration with the 2nd
grade teacher.
2. Lead First Reconciliation and First Eucharist retreats for our families
as immediate preparation for the celebration of Reconciliation and
Eucharist.
3. Assist in planning and in participating in the First Reconciliation and
First Eucharist liturgical celebrations.

Sacramental Preparation for Confirmation (8th grade)
1. Oversee Sacramental Preparation in collaboration with the Middle
School Religion teacher.
2. Develop and implement a new program for preparing our youth for
Confirmation.
3. Assist in planning and in participating in the Confirmation liturgy.

OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Be present as scheduled and ready to work as needed to meet
responsibilities. Includes: recognizing when situations require more
effort, satisfying responsibilities in a timely manner, providing an
example of punctuality and attendance, and generally ensuring all
departmental work is completed.
2. Help create a productive environment where there is harmony,
good morale, and cooperative teamwork; monitor self/productivity
and take corrective action as appropriate.
3. Maintain and improve work knowledge and skills including
understanding of requirements and work procedures, and the
purpose of work completed.
4. Maintain all communication requirements including interpersonal
skills with the employees and parishioners, keeping superiors and
appropriate others informed.
5. Maintain confidentiality of all work data.
6. Additional tasks identified by the supervisor.

Desired Qualifications
• Active, practicing Roman Catholic in full communion with the Catholic Church, with a demonstrated commitment to the mission of the Church and full assent to all magisterial teaching.
• Has a passion for evangelization, catechesis, and family life and helping others to know, love, and serve God and follow Jesus Christ as disciples.
• Bachelor's degree or higher in theology, religious education/catechetics, pastoral ministry, marriage and family life, or related field.
• Teaching or coordinating experience.
• Knowledge of the Church documents on evangelization, catechesis, and family life with the ability and enthusiasm to implement and share them with diverse and varied audiences.
• Demonstrated leadership skills with the ability to inspire other leaders to carry out the mission and ministry of evangelization, catechesis, and family life in a pastoral manner.
• Demonstrated supervisory and managerial skills, capable of overseeing multiple programs simultaneously, and prioritizing activity.
• Sets an example of integrity, accountability, productivity, and teamwork.
• Ability to clearly articulate the kerygma in a variety of ministry settings.
• Ability to form others in the ministry skills of mentorship (discipleship), small group facilitation, kerygmatic catechesis, initial proclamation, and effective change management.
• Ability to address key contemporary moral and social issues with a pastoral approach, centered in Church teaching.
• Strong verbal and written skills.
• Successfully complete and stay up to date with the Essential 3 (Background check, Virtus, and Code of Conduct).
• Proficiency in office technology, copiers, and electronic communications.
