DIRECTOR OF FAITH FORMATION

POSITION DESCRIPTION: Full Time, Exempt Status
SALARY: $37,000 to $43,000
REPORTS TO: Pastor/Administrator. Also takes direction from parochial vicars.
PRIMARY FUNCTION OF THIS POSITION: In coordination with the Pastor, the Director of Faith Formation develops, implements, and directs sacramental preparation, catechesis, and all other faith formation programs for St. Paul the Apostle Parish.

MAJOR POSITION DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (essential functions)

A. Directs a faith formation program for Saint Paul the Apostle Parish that supports a lifelong deepening of the Catholic faith for all parishioners consistent with the Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC), National Directory for Catechesis (NDC), diocesan guidelines, and parish needs.
- Develops goals, objectives, and strategies for a comprehensive faith formation program that serves the following groups of Saint Paul the Apostle Parishioners:
- Pre-K through 2nd Grade (Including direct preparation for the Sacraments of Initiation).
- 2nd through 8th Graders
- High School Youth
- Young Adults (18-35)
- Families and Older Adults
- Individuals and Families Participating in RCIA and RCIC
- Families Preparing to Celebrate a Baptism
- Couples Preparing for Marriage.
- Returning Catholics
- Parishioners with Special Needs
- In conjunction with the parish priests and staff, develops and implements a coherent and unified curriculum and catechetical plan for the parish of Saint Paul the Apostle.
- In consultation with parish priests, adjusts catechetical program components (locations, times, materials, human and physical resources) at the six churches of the parish as needed in order to accomplish faith formation goals.
- Directs and coordinates the purchasing of catechetical resources (AV, textbooks, supplemental and resource materials, liturgy materials) that complement the faith formation curriculum.
- Communicates with volunteers, participants, parents, and the parish-at-large to keep all parties informed of faith formation efforts.
- Maintains close contact and a strong working relationship with the diocesan office of faith formation, making use of diocesan faith formation resources and collaborating on various events and projects when possible.
- Continually seeks opportunities to improve the quality, depth, and breadth of the faith formation program at St. Paul the Apostle Parish, and communicates recommendations to appropriate parties.
- Proactively seeks feedback from parishioners and diligently responds to parishioners' concerns or suggestions by informing them of actions taken.
- Attends staff meetings with priests and other core office staff on a weekly basis or as needed in order to facilitate collaboration, discuss goals and objectives, and evaluate ongoing progress.
- Represents the parish in all interactions with staff, parishioners, and the general public by conducting himself/herself in accord with the teachings of the Catholic Church.
- Actively participates in the annual formulation of a budget for his or her area of responsibility and is evaluated on performance with respect to operating within his or her budget during the previous year.
- Participates in an annual performance review in his or her area of responsibility with supervisor that is based on job description.
- Carries out other duties as assigned or requested.

B. Directs and coordinates the faith formation staff and volunteers at all six churches of St. Paul the Apostle Parish.
- Advises parish priests on staffing needs for the faith formation program at Saint Paul the Apostle parish, making meaningful recommendations about any adjustments and/or changes.
- Provides and/or conducts training sessions and organizational meetings for parish PCLs, Youth Ministers, and RCIA and RCIC catechists and volunteers.
- Meets on a regular basis with faith formation staff to facilitate collaboration, discuss goals and objectives, evaluate ongoing progress, and celebrate positive achievements.
- Trains faith formation staff, observes performance, and conducts written performance reviews based on job descriptions on an annual basis.
- Addresses employee performance deficits in a timely and appropriate manner.
- Aggressively recruits, trains, and directs volunteers from the parish to be directly involved in handing on the faith at all levels, making sure to acknowledge and thank them for their work.
- Implements and ensures compliance at all times with the Diocese of Portland "Cluster Personnel Policies and Procedures Manual."
- Establishes parameters for staff under his or her supervision to make independent decisions.
- Acts as advisor and resource coordinator to volunteer-led parish groups, including the young adult group (CAFÉ), the Boy Scouts, Marriage Encounter, and other parish groups as needed.

C. Collaborates with parish priests and other staff in planning, coordinating, and promoting major liturgies tied to the faith formation program and ongoing catechetical opportunities for the parish.
- Works with priests, the director of pastoral life, and other parish staff and volunteers to plan and coordinate parish celebrations of first Holy Communion and Confirmation, first Penance, and the Easter Vigil.
- In collaboration with parish staff and volunteers, develops, supports, and provides adult education opportunities throughout the year, including variously themed missions and retreats for the parish, catechetical series covering a broad range of Catholic topics, and other events and programs that encourage parishioners to deepen their knowledge of the faith.
- Works with diocesan faith formation staff and faith formation staff from other parishes to collaborate on various occasional faith formation events and programs throughout the diocese.

JOB REQUIREMENTS/POSITION SPECIFICATIONS:

- Is a practicing Roman Catholic who understands and enthusiastically supports the mission and purpose of the Church and parish.
- Adheres to and understands the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church and is able to evaluate curriculum and catechetical programs for their faithfulness to church teaching.
- Builds community and works as part of a team.
- Develops, manages, and works within the parameters of a program budget.
- Has completed or will successfully complete within 90 days of start of employment the diocesan program "Protecting God's Children."
- Meets all of the employment policies specified in the Diocese of Portland "Cluster Personnel Policies and Procedures Manual."
- Demonstrates basic proficiency with a personal computer so as to be able to carry out normal office functions.
- Maintains confidentiality.
- Presents himself/herself professionally.
- Is willing to work on nights and weekends as needed or requested.
- Possesses and maintains a valid Maine driver's license and be insurable.

EDUCATION, TRAINING AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor's degree in theology or philosophy from a Catholic institution required, Masters Degree preferred.
Strong leadership and administration skills.
Strong oral and written communication skills.
