DIRECTOR OF PASTORAL LIFE

POSITION DESCRIPTION: Full Time, Exempt Status
SALARY: $32,000 to $36,000
REPORTS TO: Pastor/Administrator. Also takes direction from parochial vicars.
PRIMARY FUNCTION OF THIS POSITION: In collaboration with the priests, the Director of Pastoral Life oversees the pastoral and liturgical work of Saint Paul the Apostle Parish by coordinating pastoral care, directing parish outreach consistent with the corporal works of mercy, and coordinating liturgical ministries and pastoral documentation.

MAJOR POSITION DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (essential functions)

A. In consultation with the parish priests, demonstrates leadership in evaluating and providing for the pastoral needs of Saint Paul the Apostle Parish.
- Through effective leadership in planning, directing, and coordinating, works to develop and cultivate parish structures that facilitate liturgical ministry and promote effective pastoral outreach by parish priests, staff and volunteers.
- Continually seeks opportunities to improve awareness, response, and documentation of pastoral care needs and to more effectively coordinate all parish liturgical and pastoral activity, communicating recommendations to appropriate parties.
- Proactively seeks feedback from parishioners and diligently responds to parishioners' concerns or suggestions by informing them of actions taken.
- Aggressively recruits volunteers from the parish to participate in the pastoral ministry of Saint Paul the Apostle Parish, making sure to acknowledge and thank them for their work.
- Attends staff meetings with priests and other core office staff on a weekly basis or as needed in order to facilitate collaboration, discuss goals and objectives, and evaluate ongoing progress.
- Implements and ensures compliance at all times with the Diocese of Portland "Cluster Personnel Policies and Procedures Manual."
- Represents the parish in all interactions with staff, parishioners, and the general public by conducting himself/herself in accord with the teachings of the Catholic Church.
- Actively participates in the annual formulation of a budget for his or her area of responsibility and is evaluated on performance with respect to operating within his or her budget during the previous year.
- Participates in an annual performance review in his or her area of responsibility with supervisor that is based on job description.
- Carries out other duties as assigned or requested.

B. In close collaboration with the parish priests, coordinates pastoral and sacramental care for those who live within the parish of Saint Paul the Apostle.
- When needed and possible, organizes, directs, and documents pastoral care provided by the parish priests, including:
- Funeral arrangements
- Sacramental and pastoral visits to homes or institutions
- Pastoral meetings
- Wedding Inquiries
- Inquiries about becoming Catholic
- Other inquiries or pastoral requests made to the priests
- Oversees parish efforts to encourage parishioners to be involved in the various areas of pastoral ministry by promoting awareness of the work that the parish is doing and making opportunities to be involved readily available to those who are interested and able to participate.
- Directs, trains, supports, and documents the work of parish volunteers involved in the following areas of pastoral ministry: prison ministry, ministry to shut-ins and nursing homes, bereavement ministry, ministry to the poor and needy, ministry to the divorced, and all other areas of pastoral ministry offered by volunteers on behalf of the parish.
- Documents with care and accuracy the sacramental and pastoral ministry that is provided by Saint Paul the Apostle Parish, and ensures that proper documentation and notification is sent to all appropriate parties.
- Directs the parish's compliance with diocesan norms for volunteers, particularly by ensuring and documenting participation in the Virtus program.

C. Coordinates parish liturgical ministers, parish ministry calendars, and combined liturgies of the parish.
- Coordinates liturgical ministry recruiting, training and/or commissioning for parish sacristans, readers, extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion, ushers and greeters, and altar servers.
- Directs and maintains accurate and updated liturgical ministers' lists and calendars for Saint Paul the Apostle Parish.
- Coordinates music and other liturgical ministries at parish baptisms, funerals, and weddings.
- Directs and coordinates ministries for joint Masses that are celebrated throughout the year at different churches within the Parish of St. Paul the Apostle.

D. Coordinates parish outreach to the poor and needy
- Continually works to identify new ways to address community needs with creative solutions that draw on the strengths of the parish and involve parishioners in charitable activity.
- Works with priests and parish commissions in determining the protocols for the allocation of moneys from the parish's poor fund.
- Develops and maintains a trustworthy and accurate list of referral agencies and individuals.
- Coordinates and documents annual charitable efforts of the parish, including various clothing drives, Thanksgiving baskets, Christmas giving trees, fuel aid drives, and pro-life programs.
- Directs and documents all charitable efforts and work that is conducted in the name of, or on behalf of the parish of Saint Paul the Apostle.

JOB REQUIREMENTS/POSITION SPECIFICATIONS:
- Is a practicing Roman Catholic who understands and enthusiastically supports the mission and purpose of the Church and parish.
- Demonstrates an understanding of the rites of the Roman Catholic Church, and has the ability to plan and coordinate liturgical ministries.
- Is aware of Catholic social teaching and is able to apply the church's teaching to the daily life of the parish.
- Has the ability and desire to recruit volunteers and build community in diverse parish settings.
- Is able to develop, manage, and work within the parameters of a program budget.
- Maintains confidentiality.
- Presents himself/herself professionally.
- Is willing to work on some nights and weekends as needed or requested.
- Has completed or will successfully complete within 90 days of start of employment the diocesan program "Protecting God's Children."
- Meets all of the employment policies specified in the Diocese of Portland "Cluster Personnel Policies and Procedures Manual."
- Demonstrates basic proficiency with a personal computer so as to be able to carry out normal office functions.
- Possesses and maintains a valid Maine driver's license and is insurable.

EDUCATION, TRAINING AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor's degree in Social Work, Theology, Religious Studies, Pastoral Ministry or other related field preferred.
5 years experience in church ministry or related field preferred.
5 years supervisory experience preferred.
