JOB DESCRIPTION -- SUPERINTENDENT

General Administration
- Leads the cooperative effort with Dickinson Catholic Schools (DCS) Administration, Principals, Pastors, and the Board of Education in all aspects of Pre K-12 school affairs.
1. Articulates and implements the mission of DCS.
2. Leads in developing a unified Pre K-12 education system.
3. Keeps pastors and parishes informed of all facets related to DCS.
4. Interprets school and administrative policies to administrators, faculty, staff, students and parents.
5. Prepares the master calendar for DCS.
6. Gives input to the annual building budget.
7. Gives pre-Board approval of the DCS annual budget.
8. Plans special events.
- Is familiar with diocesan and state policies and laws.
- Assures completion of all reports required for the North Dakota State Department of Public Instruction and the Diocese of Bismarck.
- Represents DCS in organizations providing educational services that benefit DCS.
- Develops and maintains a working relationship with the public school administrators and staff who provide services for students in private schools.
- Gives regular reports to the Board of Education on DCS activities and educational trends.
- Gives final approval of tuition assistance.
- Maintains complete, accurate, up-to-date student personnel records.

Faith Community
- Leads in developing a faith community among administrators, faculty, staff, students and parents.
- Gives witness to the Catholic religious dimension of the school by attitude and example.
- Provides leadership in the faith formation of faculty.
- Demonstrates leadership in the development of the religious education program.

Curriculum and Instruction
- Exercises leadership in all phases of the educational program.
- Assures that the standards required for approval and/or accreditation by the North Dakota Department of Public Instruction are maintained.
- Collaborates with the elementary and high school principals in the articulation and implementation of the curriculum Pre K -- 12.
- Pursues the instructional materials needed for effective implementation of the curriculum.
- Assumes responsibility for the planning, operation, supervision and evaluation of the educational program, including overseeing the process of continuous school improvement.
- Stays abreast of trends in curriculum, learning theory and teaching strategies.
- Promotes an effective teaching environment that encourages the development of creative learning programs.
- Assures that the referral of children for special services available through state and federal programs is appropriate.

Supervision of Administration, Faculty and Staff
- Oversees the function of the Business Office, Development Office, High School and Elementary Principals, and Facilities Manager.
- Searches for, interviews and hires certified administrators for open positions.
- Orients new administrators.
- Encourages professional growth of administrators.
- Plans agenda and conducts regular administrator meetings.
- Evaluates each administrator annually.
- Hires and supervises teachers and staff in accordance with diocesan and state policies.
- Assists teachers in using teaching methods appropriate to the students' learning styles.
- Ensures the orientation of new staff members and substitutes.
- Provides for in-service training and professional growth for teachers and staff according to needs.
- Provides job descriptions to administrators and for DCS faculty and staff.
- Provides training on the diocesan policies for the "Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People."
- Establishes a positive working environment.
- Initiates non-renewal of administrators and certified teachers when needed, maintaining appropriate documentation to sustain decision for non-renewal.
- Informs the Board of Education of any non-renewal decisions.
- Assists Development Office, when needed, in soliciting gifts.
- Is responsible for developing the Faculty-Staff handbooks.
- Provides accurate and current information to the Business Office for administration and certified staff personnel files.

School Environment
- Provides for the safety, welfare and care of DCS students while they are attending school and school activities.
- Collaborates with administrators and pre K -12 faculty to develop behavior expectations that reflect Christian values.
- Communicates behavior policies and procedures to administration and staff members, students and parents, and enforces these as needed.
- Conducts conferences with individual students, teachers and parents as requested or necessary.
- Takes necessary actions in cases of suspected child abuse.
- Establishes and communicates procedures for handling student sickness, accidents, suspensions, and/or expulsion.
- Maintains appropriate documentation to sustain a decision for expulsion when needed.
- Informs the Board of Education of any expulsion decisions.
- Develops and implements a crisis management plan.
- Maintains knowledge of referral agencies, fire and police department and social services available to the school.

Public Relations
- Maintains cooperative parish relationships.
- Communicates with parents and involves them in the activities and programs of the school.
- Establishes positive public relations within and outside the school community.
- Maintains an interest in the local civic community and fosters school participation when possible and appropriate.
- Assists in a plan to provide articles and photographs to the local media.
- Assists the principals in developing and maintaining recruitment and retention activities.
- Develops and maintains a cooperative relationship with diocesan Catholic school and public school administrators.
- Cooperates with local public schools in school projects and activities.

Professional Requirements and Growth
- Maintains the coursework and other requirements for the appropriate administrator's credential.
- Attends Diocesan and area administrator meetings.
- Maintains membership in professional organizations.

Board of Education
- Prepares the agenda for Board of Education meetings.
- Provides the board with reports and information that will enable it to critically review and make recommendations or decisions on the agenda items.
- Assists the Board in policy formulations by providing options in the recommendation process.
- Submits all legal matters to the Board.

Federal Grants and Programs
- Submits proposals to the Dickinson Public School District for available federal funds for title programs.
- Keeps all the records and submits all the reports required by these grants.
- Prepares the supply orders and develops the in-service as required by these grants
- Works cooperatively with the designated grant writer.
