Job Description

Chesterton Academy is seeking a full-time Mathematics teacher to join our passionate and dedicated faculty starting in the 2026-27 school year.

Teaching Mathematics at Chesterton Academy

Mathematics is studied seriously and valued highly as an integral part of the Integrated Curriculum. Mathematics teachers should strive to provide a rich and comprehensive vision of mathematics to their students, springing from awe and wonder and culminating in knowledge and mathematical mastery. Classes should explore how mathematical ideas progress logically and systematically through question and answer, how concepts are related to each other, and how each topic builds on earlier topics. Pedagogy and lessons should focus more on helping students to think through problems for themselves than on emphasizing rote computation and blindly following patterns, techniques, and formulas - as crucial as these things are for mathematical proficiency. With intentionality and passion, teachers will cultivate experiences of shape, quantity, and number that provoke wonder and lead students into a joyful encounter with reality and the beauty of order. This journey of discovery will not only inspire amazement about mathematical topics but will also equip students with the logical reasoning and other critical habits of mind and heart for their study of other subjects.

Qualifications

Candidates must be practicing Catholics who can provide a credible witness to the harmony between faith, reason, and life, and must be willing to take the Oath of Fidelity to the Magisterium of the Roman Catholic Church.

A bachelor's or master's degree in Mathematics or a related field is required.

Experience teaching Mathematics is required. Experience teaching Geometry, Algebra I/II, Precalculus, Calculus, and/or Statistics is preferred.

Three to five years of teaching experience is preferred, as well as experience in and passion for Catholic, classical education.

Additional experience in teaching outside of mathematical subjects is a significant plus. Applicants who have received an integrated, Catholic liberal arts high school or college formation, or interdisciplinary teaching or learning experience, will receive priority consideration.

Applicants must be willing and able to offer formal and informal mentoring to students as the school is committed to a strongly relational approach to formation, the pursuit of excellence, and personal discipline.

Preference is given to those who have familiarity with the Chesterton Academy community and are passionate about our joyfully Catholic, classical approach to high school formation.

Teachers should possess teaching excellence, subject matter knowledge, classroom management, excellent organizational, written and verbal communication skills, and possess a track record of contributing passionately to the Catholic vision and mission of an apostolic and educational enterprise.

Philosophy of Mathematics at Chesterton Academy

Mathematics at Chesterton Academy is the contemplation of order, truth, and intelligibility in creation. Through the study of geometry, algebra, calculus, and statistics, students develop habits of logical reasoning, proof, and precision, learning to recognize the correspondence between mathematical structures and the physical world. The disciplines of Mathematics are taught from a classical perspective, reflecting Plato's idea that Math teaches that objective truth exists and is knowable. In this respect, Mathematics is a vaccine against relativism. Mathematics forms the intellect in humility before truth and confidence in reason, revealing beauty and order as reflections of the rationality of the Creator and providing essential tools for scientific inquiry and responsible decision-making.
