Job Description

I. IDENTIFYING INFORMATION

Position Title: Chancellor
Status: Full-Time; Exempt
Reports to: Archbishop
Supervises: Executive Director, Catholic Charities
Executive Director, Communications
Executive Director, Evangelization and Catechesis
Executive Director, Human Resources
Superintendent, Catholic Schools
Victim Assistance Coordinator
Archivist
Executive Assistants

II. PRIMARY FUNCTION

The chancellor serves as the archbishop's delegate to coordinate the internal operations and administrative affairs of the archdiocese. The chancellor provides supervision of key leadership positions ensuring that members of the curia properly fulfill the office entrusted to them through collaboration, accountability, and mission effectiveness.

III. POSITION CONTENT

A. Major Responsibilities and Regular Activities

1. Ensure the accuracy and integrity of canonical records housed in the Archives
2. Act as ecclesiastical notary
3. Serve as a member of the archbishop's leadership team and facilitate leadership team meetings
4. Coordinate the development of overall mission statements, goals, objectives, strategies and policies of the archdiocese
5. Facilitate the development and monitoring of the archdiocesan pastoral plan
6. Facilitate meetings of the Archdiocesan Pastoral Council
7. Represent the archdiocese at local, state, and national levels
8. Oversee the planning and implementation of major archdiocesan projects,
9. Serve as archdiocesan point person on task forces and local and national events
10. Collaborate with the Vicar General and Chief Financial Officer to prepare the annual budget
11. Ensure that reports of unethical behavior are properly investigated and brought to a just conclusion
12. Develop and oversee the calendar of operations for the Catholic Center and communicate delays and closings when necessary
13. Review nominations for awards and board memberships and advise the archbishop on the suitability of candidates
14. Review and approve requests for speakers from outside the archdiocese
15. Oversee the ECHO Program through the University of Notre Dame
16. Approve requests for professional development by Catholic Center employees
17. Review and approve job requisitions in alignment with the organizational chart
18. Serve as chair of the Legacy Gala planning committee
19. Serve as chair of the Capital Projects Committee
20. Serve as an ex-officio member of the Council of Priests and College of Deans
21. Serve as an ex-officio member of the Archdiocesan Review Board
22. Perform other duties as assigned by the archbishop

IV. POSITION SPECIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS

A. SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND/OR ABILITIES

1. Excellent oral and written communications skills
2. A thorough understanding of the teachings of the Catholic Church and the mission of the Archdiocese of Indianapolis
3. Strong administrative and leadership skills, especially in the areas of planning, supervision, and leadership development
4. Skilled at problem solving, conflict resolution, and crisis management
5. Ability to work collaboratively and foster teamwork among staff members
6. Ability to model lifelong learning through a commitment to the acquisition of new skills
7. Ability to analyze and interpret information and data pertinent to areas of responsibility
8. Ability to perform designated duties under time constraints

B. EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND/OR EXPERIENCE

1. A master's degree in theology, religious education, or a related field is required
2. At least 10 years of experience in administration and leadership is required
3. Must be a professed and practicing Catholic in good standing with a love of the Church

V. WORKING CONDITIONS

1. Evening and weekend work is often necessary
2. Regular travel is required within the archdiocese
3. There is access to much confidential information which must be safeguarded
