Job Description
Direct & coordinate the music program for the parish, to facilitate the full & active participation of the parishioners in the liturgical life of the parish while being the parish organist. The director is to be closely involved with the work of fostering the spiritual life of the people in the parish by promoting good and sacred liturgical celebrations.The Director of Music music have knowledge of the tenants of the Catholic faith and liturgical tradition and be capable of playing the organ and singing.
Essential Functions:
1) The Director will confer regularly with the pastor and attend parish meetings when appropriate.
2) The Director will provide musical leadership at the Saturday evening and Sunday morning celebrations of the Eucharist.
3) The Director will hire and coordinate cantors for Mass.
4) The Director will recruit, organize, and direct regularly scheduled rehearsals for the adult and youth choirs.
5) The Director will be responsible for the music for holy days of obligation. These may include evening and morning Masses as well as other significant liturgical days.
6) The Director will coordinate with the Pastor and DRE for all major parish celebrations; First Communion, Confirmation, school masses and graduation liturgies.
7) The Director is responsible for liturgical music at all parish weddings and funerals. If unable to attend these services, the Director will provide a suitable substitute.
8) The Director will be responsible for planning and coordinating liturgical events including but not limited to Easter Triduum, Advent/Lenten penance services & Advent lesson & carols.
9) The Director will give special care in the preparation and presentation of music during Lent and Holy Week as well as be responsible for additional services during these seasons.
10) The Director will provide support to the ecclesiastical enhancement of the school music program.
11) The Director is responsible for the care and maintenance of all parish instruments as well as the upkeep of the parish's music library, which is to be kept organized in binders and left at the parish as well as the periodic evaluation of parish worship aids. Any spending for music or extra musicians must be with the permission of the Pastor.
12) The Director is responsible to provide music for all funerals, weddings, and school liturgies for which additional compensation will be given.
13)The Director is responsible to provide the parish with a suitable substitute musician(s) for all services the Director is unable to perform at. This includes but is not limited to all services during vacation, personal days, and sick time.
14) The Director must be here 20 minutes prior to all weekend masses and 30 minutes prior to any wedding or funeral.
15) The performance review of the Director of Music will be based on the duties and responsibilities outlined in this job description.
