Supervisor and Direct Report: Extended Care DirectorHours: Mon-Friday 3:00 pm-6:00 pm, flexible day options available
The Basilica School of Saint Mary, a Catholic Pre-K through eight Parish School in Alexandria, Virginia, is seeking after-school staff for primary and elementary grades teachers for the 2025-2026 School year. The staff member will work as a team, in a highly collaborative manner. The staff member will manage a variety of activities including indoor and outdoor play. Qualified candidates will fully embrace the mission of our Catholic school, which recognizes the infinite value of each student, seeks to develop the gifts of all, and nurtures them to be saints, stewards, and scholars. Ideal candidates will have childcare experience, an understanding of child development, and an interest in providing a happy after-school experience.

Extended Day Staff play a critical role in supporting the mission of the Basilica School of Saint Mary by ensuring a safe, engaging, and nurturing environment for students in grades Pre-K through 8 during after-school hours. Staff members are responsible for supervising students, facilitating enrichment activities, and maintaining a structured routine that reflects the values of our Catholic school community. This position requires professionalism, strong communication skills, and a genuine commitment to student well-being.
Primary Responsibilities
Arrive one hour prior to dismissal to receive assignments, prepare materials, and rosters.
Supervise and engage students in a variety of structured activities including snack time, indoor/outdoor play, enrichment, and quiet homework or reading time
Escort students between classrooms, restrooms, the front desk, and other designated areas safely and efficiently
Provide basic first aid when necessary and report any injuries or health concerns promptly to the Director
Maintain accurate attendance records and communicate student movement using the walkie-talkie system
Assist with setup and cleanup of classrooms, materials, and activity areas
Monitor student behavior and implement positive guidance strategies
Collaborate with team members to ensure consistent supervision and smooth transitions
Report incidents, concerns, or health matters to the Director of Extended Day in a timely and professional manner
Uphold all safety, supervision, and conduct policies established by the school and Extended Day Program
Facilitate a respectful, inclusive, and positive environment aligned with the values of the Catholic faith
Qualifications
High School Diploma Required; Bachelor's degree preferred
Prior experience in a school, camp, or childcare
Escort students safely between classrooms, restrooms, front desk, and other designated locations
Ability to maintain composure and professionalism in a fast-paced environment
Excellent communication and organizational skills
Commitment to fostering a supportive and faith-filled atmosphere for students
Monitor student behavior and intervene appropriately to support positive conduct
Familiarity with or willingness to learn walkie-talkie communication and digital/printed attendance rosters
Basic first aid knowledge or willingness to obtain training
Collaborate effectively with colleagues to ensure the program runs smoothly and efficiently
Must be willing to support and communicate the mission of the Basilica School of Saint Mary and uphold the values of our Catholic faith
Must be 18 years or older and able to pass a background check and complete VIRTUS training
