Job Description

Part-Time Art Teacher
St. Joseph Classical, a Chesterton Academy | Sioux Falls, SD
Position Type: Part-time
Reports To: Headmaster
Start Date: Fall 2026
About St. Joseph Academy
Rooted in the Heart of Jesus, St. Joseph Academy is a Catholic classical school at St. Joseph Cathedral in
Sioux Falls, serving students from Pre-K through 12th grade across our Montessori, K-8 Academy, and
Chesterton Academy programs. We cooperate richly with parents to form young souls in wisdom, virtue,
and love, contemplating together the truth, goodness, and beauty of our Catholic tradition.
Position Summary
We are seeking a skilled, joyful part-time Art Teacher to lead fine art and handcraft instruction. This
teacher will guide students through a sequenced curriculum that honors the great tradition of skill-
based art and handcraft, helping each child encounter beauty and develop real competence with their
hands.
This role is well-suited to an artist or craftsperson who delights in passing on genuine skill to children,
who can hold a calm and ordered classroom, and who is drawn to a school where art is treated as
essential rather than peripheral.
Key Responsibilities
Teach all scheduled lower school art and handcraft classes, following the school's provided
curriculum plan
Teach Chesterton Art and Art Studio for our upper school students
Lead each class through a consistent, ordered arc: opening prayer, presentation or story,
focused work, student-led clean-up, review and documentation in the student art journal, and
closing
Coordinate volunteer specialists who assist with particular handcrafts, especially when
introducing new skills
Communicate regularly with classroom teachers to provide take-home prep work and ongoing
in-classroom projects (for example, the Kindergarten seasonal tapestry table)
Purchase, organize, and maintain art supplies and the art classroom environment
Build a beautiful, orderly studio space that itself forms the students
Preferred Skills

A genuine love of skill-based fine art and handcraft, rooted in the Western tradition. A variety of
artistic backgrounds are welcome; we are intentionally steering away from self-referential
modernism.
Delight in giving children the opportunity to learn real, transferable skills
Ability to establish and maintain an ordered classroom arc and a peaceful working environment
Strong communication and coordination skills for working alongside classroom teachers and
volunteers
Willingness and ability to follow the school's curriculum plan
Strong organizational instincts and a gift for creating a beautiful, well-prepared studio
environment
Prior experience in a classical school is welcome but not required - we are glad to support a
skilled artist and teacher in growing into the classical approach
To Apply
Please send a resume, a brief letter of interest, and (if available) samples or links to your own artistic
work to shofflander@stjosephclassicalacademy.org . Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis.
