AT A GLANCE- $65,000 base salary or 39% of revenue, whichever is greater. Annual compensation is $65,000-$80,000
- Practitioner-operator role: 15-30 hours of private tutoring and group classes per week + operations work

- Target start date: June/July 2025
POSITION OVERVIEW
Magnolia Prep is hiring one full-time SAT/ACT prep instructor to work at our Orlando office.
The position is a practitioner-operator role that combines private tutoring for the SAT/ACT and teaching SAT/ACT group classes with executing a designated wedge of operations work for the company (representing the company to college counselors and independent educational consultants, consulting with potential clients by phone and helping them design a customized tutoring plan, etc.).
All employees also meet weekly 1-on-1 with the owner and attend our weekly all-company meeting.
START DATE: June/July 2025
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES
Once your client base is built up, you'll carry a full caseload of private tutoring and group classes (approximately 20-30 hours per week). Tutors are welcome to tutor more students and earn more if they prefer, but consistently averaging 15-30 hours per week of private tutoring and group classes is what we aim for and expect.
Tutoring sessions are normally scheduled after school and on Saturdays. The office is closed on Sundays, Holy Days of Obligation, and Holy Triduum (half-day on Maundy Thursday, closed on Good Friday and Holy Saturday).
We teach most of our students in-person at the office, but some tutoring is online.
You'll also serve as the main point of contact for your students and their families, and so would be responsible for returning calls, e-mails, and texts by the next business day. This responsibility is typically light.
You will also be trained for and assigned a designated portion of operations work for the business such as representing the company to college counselors and independent educational consultants, consulting with potential clients by phone and helping them design a customized tutoring plan, etc.
The specific balance between tutoring and operations hours will vary week-to-week so as to maintain a consistent 40-hour schedule. When you are building up your caseload, operations work will likely be the majority of your hours and will decrease as your schedule fills up.
While our standard goal is a 40-hour workweek, there are opportunities to work additional hours (up to ~45) during peak seasons. This is optional but provides a direct path to maximizing your earnings during periods of high student demand.
Lastly, you'll attend the weekly all-company meeting and your weekly 1-on-1 meeting with the company owner John Burford IV.
TRAINING AND PROFESSIONAL GROWTH
You will be receiving rigorous training in the SAT itself and its material (math, grammar, vocabulary, etc.) so as to achieve mastery. You will also be trained in the SAT Math and Grammar AI software that we utilize as well as other SAT-specific tools and resources.
You'll receive SAT/ACT private tutoring and group class pedagogy training from the company owner (a 15-year industry veteran with a 1590 SAT and Princeton degree), plus weekly mentoring.
A core part of your first-year development is the Magnolia Prep canon. You will read 12 essential books (one per month) covering test prep, business/leadership, and the Catholic faith. You will discuss each book directly with the company owner as part of your weekly 1-on-1 mentoring. This program is designed to foster your growth as a skilled instructor, a future leader, and a well-formed person.
We are building a team for the long haul and are looking for individuals who want to build a career, not just take a job. We ask for a good faith, two-year commitment to ensure we can invest deeply in your training and growth. In return, we are committed to your formation and long-term success, with clear paths to management and leadership as the company expands.
Our practitioner-operator model is foundational to our culture. We believe that to be a great company, every team member must understand both the service we provide and the business that supports it. This dual focus ensures you are not only developing mastery as an instructor but also gaining valuable business acumen. It's how we build well-rounded professionals who can contribute to our mission in every way and creates a more resilient and engaging career than a single-track role.
A second core part of our company's philosophy is that our leaders lead by example and thus are always practitioners. As the company continues to expand, we anticipate future management opportunities for high performers. However, these are not pure executive roles. Advancement means taking on greater leadership and business responsibility, but it will always include an instructional component. This 'player-coach' model ensures our leadership stays deeply connected to our mission and maintains mastery of our craft.
You will be a member of the National Test Prep Association.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS
1. 1450+ SAT score or 33+ ACT composite score.
2. Prior tutoring/teaching experience preferred but not required.
3. Be able to pass a background check.
4. Bachelor's degree.
5. Must either live in the Orlando area or be willing to relocate.
COMPENSATION
Salary: $65,000 base salary or 39% of private tutoring and group class revenue, whichever is greater. Annual compensation is $65,000-$80,000.
You should anticipate a 6-12 month period of building up your client base, during which you will earn on the lower end of the spectrum, and to earn on the upper end of the spectrum once your caseload is full and you are teaching more group classes, which require more experience and expertise.
Benefits: 401(k) with company match + health insurance + PTO. Paid training.
