Job Description

Resumes are now being accepted for the position of Diocesan and Cathedral Associate Music Director. This is a full-time, exempt position located at both the Diocese of Pittsburgh Pastoral Center and Saint Paul Cathedral.

The Diocesan Associate Music Director position serves as organist for diocesan events, including but not limited to those, at St. Paul Cathedral and the Diocese of Pittsburgh Pastoral Center. As the Saint Paul Cathedral Associate Music Director, this position collaborates with the Diocesan and Cathedral Music Director, cathedral rector, and diocesan Office of Worship in the development of the Liturgical Musical life of the cathedral parish.

EDUCATION: Master's Degree in Music Performance or equivalent (Organ Performance or Choral Conducting) is required.

EXPERIENCE: Minimum one (1) - three (3) years' experience directing the music program of a cathedral or large parish. Choral experience (accompanying, singing, directing) is preferred.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS: Extensive knowledge of Roman Catholic liturgical documents and Roman Catholic liturgy is required.
• Exceptional organ performance skills.
• Extensive choral accompaniment experience.
• Choral conducting skills.
• Instrumental conducting skills.
• Experience with vocal coaching/cantor rehearsal.
• Familiarity with the Liturgical Guidelines of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh.
• Proven administrative skills including but not limited to, interpersonal relations, conflict resolution, management and supervision, visioning and planning, critical thinking, budgeting, and collaboration.

Responsibilities as Diocesan Associate Music Director

• Play the organ for Diocesan liturgies at the Cathedral as assigned by the Director of Music, and under his/her direction.
• Attend and accompany Diocesan Choir rehearsals as needed.
o leading sectional rehearsals
o leading full rehearsals when necessary
• Assist with preparation and execution of all musical programming and logistics for diocesan events. The musical aspects include communicating with the Diocesan and Cathedral Music Director, determining the nature of the liturgy, planning/selecting appropriate music, assist with producing a printed worship aid. Contact/supply/rehearse all necessary musicians. Communicate all details to the Office of Worship/Bishop's Office as needed.
• Serve as organist for diocesan events, especially for those including the Diocesan Choir, and as assigned by the Director of Music.
• Assist with the rehearsal of music with the Diocesan Choir and cantors.
• Assist the Director of Music in outreach/consultation to the diocesan Bishop, other diocesan offices, clergy, and parish musicians.
• Accompany diocesan choir as needed.
• Teach on occasion at St. Paul Seminary, Crafton, in consultation with the Rector of Saint Paul Seminary, the Director of Vocations, the Diaconate Formation Office, and the Office of Worship.
• Participate in the Liturgical Commission and as member ex-officio member of the Music Sub-Committee.
• Assist with the develop and organization of formation and enrichment opportunities for diocesan pastoral musicians.
• Maintain a regular schedule of office hours at the diocesan Music Office.
• Submit materials and information for all service leaflets to the Director of Music in a timely fashion.
o Assist in drafting service leaflets, produced with music notation software and Adobe InDesign.
• Strengthens musical skills and deepens liturgical knowledge through regular practice and professional reading. Maintains membership and activity in professional organizations, including attendance at conferences or workshops, especially NPM, CRCCM, and AGO. Maintains an awareness of the state of the profession, current trends in the field, etc.

Responsibilities as Cathedral Associate Director of Music

• Assist the Director of Music in the development of the Liturgical Musical life of the Cathedral Parish.
• Prepare music for weekend Masses with the Director (Sat. 6:00 PM, Sunday 10:00 AM, 12:00 Noon and 6:00 PM).
• Assist the Director of Music to ensure musical staffing (organist and cantor) for all funerals celebrated in the Cathedral Parish (inclusive of Saint Rosalia Church, Greenfield). Communicate with the priest-presider.
• Assist the Director of Music to ensure musical staffing for all weddings celebrated in the Cathedral Parish (inclusive of Saint Rosalia Church, Greenfield).
• Play the organ for additional events such as needed, scheduling in coordination with the Director of Music.
• Coordinate the Annual Diocesan Mass observing the Solemnity of Our Lady of Guadalupe.
• Submit materials and information for all service leaflets to the Director of Music in a timely fashion.
o Assist with leaflet production, produced with music notation software and Adobe InDesign.
• Assist rehearsing with the cathedral cantors.
• Assist in recruiting and rehearsing with the semi-professional cathedral choir (sings for Sunday 12:00 PM Mass, and Holy Days of Obligation).
o Associate Director accompanies Cathedral Choir in rehearsal and in liturgy.
• Assist in the development and maintenance of the cathedral choral library.
• Direct the Cathedral Handbell Choir.
• Assist in the scheduling, hiring instrumentalists as needed, arranging/purchasing music for instrumentalists as needed.
• Participate in monthly parish pastoral staff meetings.
• Assist the Director of Music in scheduling and overseeing regular maintenance of the cathedral organ (1962 Rudolf von Beckerath Organ)/Synod Hall organ/cathedral pianos. Assist in ensuring proper preventive maintenance of all instruments.
• Assist with extra events such as guest groups using the cathedral for additional events/liturgies (High School Graduations, etc.).
• Manage all aspects of the Cathedral Concert Series.
• Strengthen musical skills and deepen liturgical knowledge through regular practice and professional reading. Maintain membership and activity in professional organizations, including attendance at conferences or workshops, especially NPM, CRCCM, and AGO. Maintain an awareness of the state of the profession, current trends in the field, etc.
