Catholic Communications Writer Editor

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Catholic Communications Writer/Editor is responsible for producing engaging, thoughtful, and mission-aligned written content for the Diocese of Green Bay and On Mission Media. This role develops original columns, feature articles, profiles and inspiring stories for On Mission magazine, e-newsletter and website.
The Catholic Communications Writer/Editor combines strong writing, reporting, interviewing, and storytelling skills with a solid understanding of the Catholic faith. The writer communicates the life, mission, and ministries of the Church in ways that inform, inspire, and connect readers to their faith and to the Catholic community.
Key responsibilities include researching and developing story ideas; conducting interviews; writing and editing compelling feature stories and columns; adapting content for digital and print audiences; and collaborating with communications, editorial, and ministry teams to ensure content accurately reflects the vision and mission of the Diocese of Green Bay and On Mission media.
The ideal candidate is an accomplished writer and storyteller who can translate complex topics-including matters of faith, Church teaching, ministry, and community life-into clear, accessible, and engaging content for a broad Catholic audience. The position requires strong editorial judgment, attention to detail, the ability to work independently, and a demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines while maintaining a high standard of quality.
A strong working knowledge of Catholic teaching, Scripture, liturgy, and the life and mission of the Church is essential. Experience in journalism, communications, Catholic media, nonprofit communications, or a related field is preferred.

MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS REQUIRED:

• Bachelor's degree in writing, journalism, English, creative writing, communications, public relations, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
• Strong understanding of and commitment to the Catholic faith; must be a practicing Catholic.
• Excellent knowledge of writing, editing, grammar, and proofreading principles.
• Solid working knowledge of print and digital media.
• Familiarity with editorial processes, project timelines, and content workflows.
• Working knowledge of Catholic teaching, Scripture, liturgy, and the life and mission of the Catholic Church.
• Proven ability to write engaging columns, feature stories, profiles, and faith-based content with a clear and authentic voice.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Strong interviewing, research, reporting, and storytelling skills.
• Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with diocesan personnel, freelance writers and photographers, ministry leaders, and interviewees.
• Strong organizational, planning, and time-management skills.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, Google Docs, WordPress, Trello, and common digital communications platforms.
• Creative thinking and strong storytelling ability.
• Ability to manage multiple writing assignments in a fast-paced environment.
• Basic familiarity with digital photography and video is a plus.
• Clearly and accurately communicate complex matters of faith, Church teaching, and diocesan life to a broad audience.
• Work collaboratively with diocesan offices while also demonstrating initiative and the ability to work independently.
• Maintain confidentiality and exercise sound editorial judgment.
• Ensure content consistently reflects the mission, vision, priorities, and goals of the Diocese of Green Bay.
• Apply critical thinking and make thoughtful, informed editorial decisions.
• Manage multiple priorities effectively and consistently meet deadlines.
• Produce high-quality written content under pressure while remaining focused on the mission of the Catholic Church.
