Job Description
Job Summary:The Nurse provides direct nursing care to the sisters of the Daughters of Saint Paul Residential Care Home. The Nurse is required to be either an RN or LPN. It is the responsibility of the Nurse to supervise the day-to-day nursing activities of the CNAs and HHAs. The Shift Nurse is also responsible for the administration of medication and treatments and personal care as needed while ensuring that all the Sisters receive safe, attentive, and appropriate care.
Job Responsibilities:
1. Manages all primary nursing on the assigned shift, including prescription fulfillment, medication administration, treatments, charting, and personal care of the sisters.
2. Conducts daily rounds of Infirmary to keep current with each of the Sisters' physical and emotional condition and ensures that staff is providing adequate care.
3. Receives reports from the nurses and nursing assistants and works closely with them to ensure maximum total care.
4. Ensures that nursing personnel provide treatments, medications, rehabilitative nursing, and activities of daily living as stated in the care plans to make certain optimum comfort and care are provided.
5. Maintains regular and ongoing communication with the Supervisor of Nursing to review and update the assessment and comprehensive care plan for each Sister and make recommendations.
6. Ensures that all staff carry out physician orders properly.
7. Ensures appropriate documentation of all new orders, changes in patient condition, and care given in the Sister's progress notes, medication, and treatment records.
8. Responds to emergencies; assesses the condition of the person; decides on the type of medical attention required; calls appropriate ambulance service if needed; notifies the Supervisor of Nursing and/or the Local Superior; notifies the physician when a change in condition occurs.
9. As necessary, provides first aid and emergency care, gives vaccines, draws blood and coordinates lab work for the Sisters.
Qualifications and Requirements:
Current State of Massachusetts license to practice as a Registered Nurse or Licensed Practical Nurse.
Ongoing continuing education as required to maintain licensure and to update nursing and management skills.
Displays knowledge and practice of asepsis and infection control.
Minimum of five years' nursing experience, preferably in long-term care.
Respect and understanding for the style and commitment of life of the Sisters in our care.
Ability to communicate with people in a manner that fosters harmony, promotes cooperation and encourages feelings of acceptance and self-worth.
Ability to coordinate a quick and effective team response to emergencies.
Ability to instruct, supervise, and evaluate nursing activities.
Ability to serve as a leader and role model in communication, compassion, understanding, and competence.
Creativity and initiative regarding the organization of work; ability to establish and rearrange priorities.
Ability to lift, pull, push, bend, and stretch to carry out the necessary tasks in attending to the needs of the Sisters.
Competent computer skills with Word, Excel, and the Internet.
