Job Description
The Monitor, news magazine and website of the Diocese of Trenton, seeks a MANAGING EDITOR to join its editorial and production team.The Managing Editor will be responsible for the daily operations of news content creation and curation about the Diocese and its local parishes, schools and agencies, as well as the wider Church in the United States and around the globe. He/she will take a leading role in publishing well written and edited news coverage via the monthly magazine (print and digital), the publication website, electronic newsletters and social media sites.
He/she will provide direct supervision of The Monitor's editorial efforts, working closely with the Associate Editor in arranging assignments, fulfilling coverage plans and ensuring that all work meets the Diocese's and The Monitor's needs and standards.
The Managing Editor will also collaborate with the Digital/Social Media Manager; the Production/Design Coordinator and the Associate Publisher to meet the organization's mission goals.
Qualifications/Experience/Attributes
• Minimum of a bachelor's degree in journalism, professional writing or related field; as well as five years leadership experience with a publishing operation, preferably a newspaper, magazine or news website.
• Exceptional editing and writing skills; clear understanding of journalistic integrity and standards.
• Proficiency with editorial functions of WORD; social media platforms and tools; photography and photojournalism.
• Familiarity with InDesign and Adobe PDF functions; use of AI for research and curation.
• Thorough understanding of Church, national and world news.
• Preferred competency in Spanish language communications and translation.
• Strong organizational skills and ability to stay calm under tight deadlines. Must be flexible and resilient with changing demands and late-breaking news.
• Deep understanding of the Catholic Church; diocesan and parish structures, and the specific needs of a faith-based audience.
• Ability to work nights/weekends and to travel throughout the Diocese or surrounding areas as the work requires.
• This is a full-time position. Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications and has a range of 90 - 97k.
