Job Description

U.S. Catholic magazine seeks an experienced Managing Editor. As a key member of the editorial leadership team for U.S. Catholic magazine and uscatholic.org, this role takes primary ownership of the day-to-day editorial production of the monthly print magazine, ensuring that all content is accurate, polished, complete, and ready for design and printing on schedule.

Working closely with the Executive Editor, the Managing Editor manages critical production workflows, serves as a senior copy editor, and helps uphold the magazine's editorial quality, consistency, and voice. The Managing Editor also writes articles or other editorial content as needed and stays current on topics relevant to the magazine's mission.

A strong eye for detail, project management skills, and writing ability are essential for success in this role. The Managing Editor supports and mentors associate editors and editorial assistants helping to develop individual and team success.

Main Accountabilities
Print Production
- Serve as the primary owner of print editorial production, ensuring all copy is complete, edited, fact-checked, and ready for design according to the monthly production schedule.
- Manage copyediting for print production, including line edits, stylistic consistency, fact-checking, and adherence to house style.
- Track and manage the flow of all print content, proactively identifying and resolving gaps, delays, or issues before they escalate.
- Ensure all print content including departments, features, columns, captions, headlines, decks, and sidebars is finalized on time.

Editorial and Copyediting
- Develop content ideas; commission and edit articles; and maintain productive relationships with authors and columnists.
- Edit articles and copy for both print and digital with a high level of editorial judgment and attention to detail.
- Maintain consistency of voice, tone, theology, and editorial standards across the magazine; manage assigned columns or departments for print and web.
- Communicate clearly and proactively with writers and columnists regarding edits, corrections, and deadlines.

Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in journalism, English, communications, or equivalent experience.
- 5-8 years of editing experience in print or digital publishing.
- Demonstrated ability to manage complex editorial workflows and meet production deadlines.
- Strong knowledge of the Catholic Church, and current trends and issues pertaining to American Catholicism.
- Familiarity with website content management systems a plus.
- Excellent communication skills, knowledge of grammar and editorial production processes, and ability to work as part of a team.
- Detail oriented and able to manage multiple projects simultaneously, including day-to-day tasks and long-range planning.

This full-time, hybrid position is located at the Claretian Missionaries office in downtown Chicago, convenient to all mass transit routes. We offer a robust benefit plan including medical, dental, disability, and life insurance. The paid time off program includes vacation, paid sick leave and paid holidays. The Claretians also support an environment that promotes a healthy work/life balance. Salary from $62,000.
