Job Description
The Archdiocese of Miami is hiring for the Editor of The Florida Catholic, the official English-language newspaper of the Archdiocese of Miami. This position is located primarily at the Miami Shores Pastoral Center and requires occasional travel to parishes and events. S/he is responsible for overseeing the planning, creation, and publication of content that reflects the mission of the Catholic Church and communicates the teachings, initiatives, and events of the Archdiocese to the Catholic community in South Florida. The Editor will ensure all content upholds the values of the Church and maintains editorial excellence. The candidate performs all duties and responsibilities in alignment with the mission, vision and values of the Catholic Archdiocese of Miami.Functions include:
News and Information:
Responsible for editing/posting daily news updates on the website and planning/editing monthly print publication. This includes deciding which stories are covered, most of which should be covered by the editor him/herself, assigning freelancers to cover additional stories when editor is not able to cover them, deciding when they will run online and when they will run in the print edition. Also, receiving, editing, posting and/or pursuing as stories the article submissions from schools, parishes and agencies of the archdiocese.
Cover news events, write stories, take pictures, edit and post their submissions.
Coordinate the designers and editors of The Florida Catholic in Orlando as to advertising / circulation /subscription /questions including the number of newspapers that are divided to each parish/entity each month.
Process all freelance and staff photos, add captions and make sure they are properly sized for print or web.
Upload stories and photos to the website.
For local stories, maintain a spreadsheet with link to edited stories posted web stories, dates of posting and printing to keep track of all the stories and assignments, and to enable the Digital Media Coordinator to promote stories on Social Media.
Check OSV News.com for national and international stories, movie reviews, and other relevant news to post on the website or go in print in as needed.
Fill The Florida Catholic Newspaper print editions.
Work on collecting pictures and layout design of Annual Financial Report in conjunction with Editor of La Voz Catolica and other Archdiocesan staff involved.
Blogs
Work in conjunction with Editor of La Voz Catolica on publication of two blogs (Let's Talk Blog, and Through the Catholic Lens).
Let's Talk Blog:
Select or solicit submissions for the Let's Talk blog, which appears every Monday.
Keep files with the submissions of the large number of authors who currently contribute.
Do a final edit of all blogs before they are posted.
Keep a spreadsheet of dates and topics of upcoming blogs to keep track of authors and topics. Let's Talk authors change every week.
Approve sending out of Let's Talk blog every Monday, making sure it has a title.
Through the Catholic Lens.
Coordinate with the Editor of La Voz Catolica the publication of Through the Catholic Lens, which appears the first Wednesday of each month, and do a final edit of blogs and post them.
With Editor of La Voz Catolica, keep up to date the spreadsheet of dates, topics and authors of upcoming blogs.
From Our Pastors
In conjunction with the Editor of La Voz Catolica, select a pastor who writes weekly bulletin messages to his parishioners and make sure they are posted each Thursday. Archives (In conjunction with the Editor of La Voz Catolica):
Maintain permanent files of newspapers (In this case files pertaining to The Florida Catholic Newspaper).
Mark up the newspaper for filing in the physical clip files.
Maintain digital files of all pictures taken and used in print and one in web. Back up the files on the server of the office and physically by transferring them to DVDs, sorted by month and year. Print out the list of files in each DVD to save alongside the disc for future reference.
Coordinate with representative of St. Thomas University for transfer of newspaper clippings, photos, and other historical materials to archdiocesan archives that are housed there.
Respond to queries of general public regarding newspaper and general information regarding the archdiocese.
Respond to public and internal requests for the file photos, clippings, research into archdiocesan history book (2008).
Podcast
Write scripts, invite guests and serve as on-air host of archdiocesan "What the Faith" Podcast, which has 10 episodes each year.
Oversee the editing of the finalized podcast.
Upload podcast to Sound Cloud, whose rss is picked up by Spotify.
Coordinate with the Social Media and Digital Communications Coordinator to post podcast on the website.
Administration
With the approval of the Senior Director of Communications, pay freelancers for stories and photographs within the limits of the budgeted resources.
Carry out fiscal responsibility and carefully monitor expenses to ensure they are kept within budget.
Other duties as assigned by supervisor.
Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Communications, or related field (Master's preferred).
Minimum 5 years of experience in journalism or editorial work, preferably in a Catholic or nonprofit setting.
Strong understanding of Catholic teaching and culture.
In-depth knowledge of the Roman Catholic Church, supportive and respectful of its mission and tenets.
Familiarity with Catholic liturgy, doctrine and the South Florida culture.
Knowledge of journalism ethics.
Skilled in active listening and social perceptiveness and coordinating actions according to the needs of the situation.
Excellent critical thinking, judgment and decision-making skills.
Ability to produce human interest features, deadline news reports, catchy headlines and informative captions.
Knowledge of principles of newspaper layout.
Understanding of multi-media and alternate story formats and how to tailor the message to different mediums and audiences.
Knowledge of social media applications and platforms; mobile services experience preferred.
Proficiency in MS Outlook, Word, and Excel, PowerPoint a plus.
Proficiency in publishing software.
Basic HTML, Photoshop and other Web production skills; Content Management System software a plus.
Excellent customer service skills, including ability to maintain focus on and professionalism with people in challenging situations, both in person and by phone.
Good time management, including ability to manage several projects at the same time and multiple deadlines.
Attentive to detail, with initiative and good follow-through.
Valid FL driver license and automobile insurance; dependable insured vehicle.
Mastery (native or near-native fluency) of written English-language and oral communication skills, including clear speaking voice.
Proficiency in Spanish language a plus.
Strong writing, editing and proofreading skills in English language.
Requires the ability to move from one area to another, interacting with many people; as well as sitting, standing, bending, typing, talking, hearing and using near and far vision.
Flexibility in the work schedule, including weekends and holidays as needed.
