Job Description

The Diocese of Rockville Centre is currently seeking a Chaplain/Prison Minister to work in prisons in Riverhead and Yaphank. This position is full-time Monday-Friday for 35 hours a week with varied hours and reports to the Director of Prison Ministry.

Position Summary
The Chaplain/Prison Minister offers spiritual guidance, faith development, emotional support, and personal growth opportunities to individuals who are incarcerated. This role focuses on building trust, promoting home, and helping participants strengthen their sense of purpose as they prepare for healthier futures.

Duties and Responsibilities

•Must be present on days liturgical celebrations are scheduled and have flexibility in his/her schedule to adapt to emerging needs.
•Make regular rounds in the correctional facility to visit inmates and staff.
•Counsel inmates and staff in spiritual matters and faith development.
•Schedule and set up liturgical celebrations in the correctional facility on a regular basis.
•Provide sacramental preparation and faith formation for inmates.
•Distribute spiritual/inspirational/ religious literature and materials.
•Refer inmates to appropriate programs and resources as needed.
•Comply with correctional facility directives and orders of the staff.
•Respond to family members' inquiries and concerns regarding inmates.
•Provide information about correctional facility and its programs to the family members of inmates.
•Participate in professional prison ministry organizations, meetings, and continuing education seminars.
•Attend and participate in scheduled DRVC Prison Ministry staff meetings.

Requirements

•Practicing Roman Catholic in good standing with strong knowledge of the Catholic Church.
•U.S. Citizen.
•Experience in ministry, chaplaincy, counseling, or similar pastoral work.
•Excellent communication, listening, and de-escalation skills.
•Must undergo background screenings and security checks as required by each facility.
•Must be fully vaccinated and comply with any additional requirements as prescribed by the facility.

Salary: $50,000.00 Yearly
