Job Description
Saint Joseph's Catholic School is a nationally known, award-winning school recognized for excellence in academics and Catholic identity. Located in Greenville, South Carolina, Saint Joseph's educates 625 students in grades 6-12. Saint Joseph's is seeking a dynamic and mission-driven Athletic Director.The Athletic Director provides strategic leadership, vision, and oversight for a comprehensive interscholastic athletics program serving students in grades 6-12. The Athletic Director must deeply appreciate and actively promote the unique mission of Catholic education, recognizing that athletics plays a vital role in forming the whole student: mind, body, and soul. The Athletic Director is tasked with ensuring that all Saint Joseph's coaches are trained in Athletics the Saint Joseph's Way. Our athletic program is intrinsically linked to the educational mission and is a visible expression of our Catholic identity. The successful candidate will ensure that all athletic teams are first and foremost communities that foster personal formation in faith, virtue, discipline, teamwork, and excellence, according to the Saint Joseph's Way.
The Athletic Director is responsible for the daily operation, long-term planning, and continuous improvement of the athletics program, including personnel management, compliance, budgeting, facilities, communications, and community engagement.
Key Responsibilities Mission & Culture
Foster a positive, inclusive athletic culture consistent with the school's mission, Catholic
Values, and the Saint Joseph's Way.
Advocate for the academic, social, emotional, and physical well-being of all student-athletes.
Promote good sportsmanship, ethical conduct, and positive coaching practices.
Ensure equitable opportunities and strong support for both male and female student-athletes.
Effectively communicate the School's vision of the athletic program to students, parents, employees, and the broader Saint Joseph's community
Leadership & Administration
Serve as a member of the School Administration Team and collaborate with Division Heads and senior leadership.
Develop and implement short- and long-range strategic plans for the athletics program that serve the overall strategic vision of the School.
Advocate for student-athletes and coaches while balancing institutional priorities.
Coordinate the master athletics calendar in alignment with the overall school calendar.
Personnel Management
Recruit, hire, supervise, mentor, and evaluate all coaches.
Provide leadership and professional growth opportunities for the athletic staff.
Establish and maintain clear job descriptions, expectations, and evaluation processes.
Hold regular meetings with coaches, athletic staff, and parents.
Mediate parent-coach and athlete-coach concerns when necessary.
Program Oversight
Oversee all interscholastic athletic programs and review offerings annually based on student interest and resources.
Publish, update, and enforce the Athletic Handbook.
Coordinate recognition programs, including athletic banquets, awards, and Hall of Fame activities (as applicable).
Direct and manage summer athletic camps, including program development, staffing, and marketing.
Compliance & Athletic Associations
Ensure compliance with all rules and regulations of governing bodies (e.g., SCHSL related guidelines and other applicable associations).
Serve as the school's official representative to athletic associations, leagues, and conferences.
Oversee eligibility verification and ensure academically ineligible students do not participate.
Scheduling, Events & Transportation
Work with Assistant Athletic Directors to develop and approve all athletic schedules, including home and away contests.
Supervise athletic events and ensure appropriate staffing, officials, security, and medical coverage.
Coordinate transportation and housing for off-campus events.
Support the safe transportation of student-athletes in collaboration with facilities and maintenance staff.
Facilities & Equipment
Oversee the use, maintenance, and cleanliness of gyms, fields, and athletic facilities.
Collaborate with facilities personnel on scheduling, renovations, and long-term facility planning according to the School's vision for its facilities
Manage purchasing, inventory, distribution, and collection of athletic equipment and uniforms.
Budget & Financial Management
Work with the Chief Financial Officer to prepare and manage the annual athletics budget.
Allocate resources responsibly to support competitive and sustainable programs.
Oversee expenditures, gate receipts, payroll coordination, and adherence to business office procedures.
Maintain accurate financial and participation records.
Communications & Advancement
Ensure timely and accurate communication of schedules, results, and athletics news.
Oversee website updates, publications, weekly athletics communications, and appropriate use of social media.
Collaborate with the Communications and Advancement teams to promote athletic programs and events.
Partner with Institutional Advancement and oversee Booster organizations to support fundraising initiatives according to the School's policies.
Qualifications Required
Bachelor's degree in an appropriate field.
Previous coaching experience.
Strong knowledge of athletic program administration and compliance.
Excellent leadership, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
Ability to collaborate and communicate effectively with students, parents, faculty, staff, and external partners.
Comfort with relevant technology and data systems.
Steadfast adherence to the Catholic vision of sports and the role it plays in the overall formation of the students.
Preferred
Master's degree or equivalent administrative experience.
Prior school or athletic administration experience.
Familiarity with athletic management systems (e.g., BigTeams or similar platforms).
