POSITION SUMMARY:

George Mason University - Fairfax, VA

Campus Ministry promotes, encourages, and engages all aspects of faith life on campus. Campus Ministry coordinates Masses, spiritual activities, and programs that seek to bring students, faculty, and staff into a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ and His Church.

The Campus Minister assists the Chaplain to form and fashion a Catholic community through faith formation and sharing, sacramental preparation, liturgy and worship, and community outreach programs.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES:

• Helps students to strengthen their faith by facilitating faith formation and faith sharing opportunities such as campus bible studies, Eucharistic adoration and catechist formation.
• Provides opportunities for personal prayer, reflection, discernment, and spiritual growth by planning and coordinating retreats, days of reflection, vocational awareness and similar activities throughout the year.
• Provides or arranges formal instruction, discussion, shared prayer and group activities to prepare Catholic students to complete their initiation into the Church and to prepare non-Catholic students to join the Catholic faith.
• Participates in the pastoral counseling of students, faculty and staff.
• Participates in the development of the liturgical life of the campus community by assisting the Chaplain in planning and implementing Sunday, seasonal and feast day liturgies; coordinating the music for liturgies; preparing and leading non-sacramental liturgies and prayer services; leading the campus community in Holy Communion in the absence of a priest; and training liturgical ministers.
• Encourages students to expand their faith through service in liturgy and worship and by developing outreach and community service opportunities, social justice programs and evangelization efforts that further the mission of Jesus Christ and His Church in the local community.
• May assist the Chaplin with various development and institutional advancement tasks in areas including but not limited to:
• Alumni relations outreach
• Community engagement
• Grant proposals
• Major donor/planned giving development
• Donor database management
• Promotes the Catholic student community on campus and in local parishes.

• •While performing the duties of this job, required to have ordinary ambulatory skills sufficient to visit other locations; ability to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, and manipulate (lift, carry, move) light to medium weight of 10 - 50 pounds
•Requires good hand-eye coordination, arm, hand, and finger dexterity, including ability to grasp, and visual acuity to use a keyboard, operate equipment and read
•Frequently required to sit, hear, talk and use repetitive motion of the hands/wrists
•Work performed in and out of the office setting
•Required to travel, including locations throughout the diocese and, infrequently, other parts of the country or other countries
•Frequent evening and/or weekend work is required

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Knowledge/Skills: Knowledge about community, campus and diocesan resources that further the life and goals of the campus faith community. Ability to apply a pastoral sensitivity in developing and nurturing positive relationships with a variety of constituencies. Ability to articulate a personal vision of spirituality, justice and community. An openness to and respect for people of all faiths. Strong commitment to evangelization. Must have a high level of integrity, ethics and professionalism. Must be self-motivated, willing to take personal initiative, and able to work both independently and with a team. Excellent written and verbal communication skills required. Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously. Strong interpersonal skills. Basic proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).
• Education: A Bachelor's degree is required.
• Licenses/Certifications: Valid driver's license must be maintained at all times.
• Years and Types of Experience: Three to five years related experience. Active membership in a faith community of the Roman Catholic Church in the Arlington diocese required.
