Job Description

Job Title: Music Director
Hours: Full-time or Part-time, reporting to the Pastor

Duties/Responsibilities:
• Serves as the principal organist or pianist.
• Selects, prepares, and coordinates music year-round for all liturgical activities at Saint Helena, according to season and need:
-Each week for the 5:00 p.m. Saturday Vigil Mass in English, 9:00 a.m. Sunday Mass in Spanish, and 11:00 a.m. Sunday Mass in English
-For major liturgies and Holy Days of Obligation throughout the year
-For the Sacred Triduum liturgies
-For the Feast Day of Saint Helena (August 18 each year)
• Coordinates music and serves as or arranges an accompanist for funerals, quinceaneras, and weddings (roughly 4 weddings, 7 quinceaneras, and 6 funerals per year).
• Works to build a comprehensive music ministry program that appreciates and utilizes the full breadth of Catholic sacred music.
• Encourages and teaches active participation among the lay faithful by means of congregational singing at liturgies and through intentional selection of music. Recruits and forms capable professional and volunteer music ministers, cantors, and choir members.
• Prepares and conducts choir rehearsals weekly.
• Seeks ongoing professional development and continuing education in the area of sacred music.
• Organizes and maintains liturgical music library, and works to ensure ethical, just, and legal practices with regard to copyright and patronizing of composers.
• Organizes and maintains all equipment used by musicians including but not limited to organ, keyboard, microphones, stands, sound system.
• Works with office staff to coordinate liturgy and rehearsal schedules, bulletin music announcements, and other related social media posts.
• Performs, on occasion, other duties relevant to the mission and ministry of St. Helena, as determined by the Pastor.

Requirements, Training, and/or Experience:
• A minimum of 2-years' experience performing at Mass.
• Degree in music, organ, or piano performance.
• Speaks English and Spanish; fluent in both is preferred, but communication in both languages is a must.
• Available to work evenings and weekends. During the week is flexible, but weekends are a must.
• Experience in forming cantors and leading rehearsals.
• Ability to manage volunteers and contract with professional musicians.
• Proficient keyboard skills on organ and piano.
• Good knowledge of Roman Catholic liturgical music; good knowledge of Gregorian chant and sacred polyphony a plus.
