Job Description
Director of Liturgy and Music, St. Mark Church, Vienna, VASaint Mark Parish in Vienna, Virginia, seeks an experienced, trained, practicing Roman Catholic musician to lead the music ministries for our weekend liturgies, holy day Masses, and other sacramental celebrations. Our music program includes active volunteers and paid musicians.
Primary Duties
Lead the music planning for most parish liturgies, review music and liturgy plans with the Pastor. The parish hymnal is Gather.
Direct various choirs and ensembles for Mass, including:
Vigil Mass ensemble of singers and instrumentalists in predominantly contemporary music;
Sunday morning choirs with a mix of music;
A choir for funeral liturgies;
A handbell choir;
Combined choirs of the parish for Triduum and other special liturgies.
Serve as organist or pianist as needed for these ensembles, for parish funerals and weddings. Meet with families to plan these liturgies and handle logistics with volunteers' help.
Manage the overall program budget. Schedule and handle timesheet submission for cantors, accompanists, and other paid musicians.
Coordinate the care, maintenance, and tuning of the parish's musical instruments, including all pianos, the organ, and the 5-octave handbell set. Ensure the church sound system and related equipment are operational and repaired or replaced as needed.
Coordinate with volunteers and support staff as needed.
Maintain the parish music library with volunteers' help.
Qualifications
Undergraduate or Graduate degree in music with proficiency in piano and organ.
Practicing Catholic with demonstrated knowledge of Roman Catholic liturgy, the role of music within the liturgy, familiarity with the Roman Missal, and other liturgical documents.
Strong organizational, interpersonal, recruiting, and volunteer management skills.
Background in choral conducting and coaching ensembles and individuals on better singing.
Working knowledge of sound equipment.
