Director of Sacred Music (Part-time)Saint John Vianney Parish - Gladwyne, PA
Saint John Vianney Parish is seeking a skilled and mission-driven Director of Sacred Music to lead and elevate the parish's liturgical music program. This role is not just about playing music-it is about shaping the prayer life of the parish through excellence in sacred music rooted in the Roman Catholic tradition.
Position Overview
The Director of Sacred Music serves as the principal musician and organist, responsible for planning, coordinating, and executing music for all major liturgical celebrations. The ideal candidate combines technical excellence with pastoral sensitivity and a deep understanding of Catholic liturgy.
Key Responsibilities
• Plan and provide music for all weekend Masses, Holy Days, and major liturgical celebrations
• Serve as principal organist and accompanist (organ and/or piano)
• Select music aligned with liturgical seasons, readings, and parish priorities
• Direct parish choir(s) and lead rehearsals
• Recruit, train, and schedule cantors and musicians
• Collaborate with clergy and staff on liturgical planning
• Develop musicians spiritually and musically
• Maintain music library and manage licensing/reporting
• Oversee maintenance of instruments (organ, piano, etc.)
• Support additional parish initiatives as needed
Qualifications
• Practicing Roman Catholic with strong knowledge of liturgy and sacred music
• Proficiency in organ and piano required
• Experience in choral conducting and liturgical music leadership preferred
• Ability to lead volunteers effectively and pastorally
• Strong organizational and communication skills
• Familiarity with Catholic liturgical documents and repertoire
• Professional, reliable, and collaborative
Work Schedule
• Regular weekend Masses
• Evenings, Holy Days, and major liturgical seasons (Christmas, Holy Week, Easter)
• Flexible administrative/preparation time
Physical Requirements
• Ability to lift up to 30 lbs and navigate stairs
Additional Requirements
• Background check and Safe Environment clearances required
Compensation:
Part-time salary commensurate with experience and qualifications.
