Job Description

The Diocesan Pastoral Center of the Diocese of Boise is seeking a full-time benefits eligible Assistant Editor (English) for the Idaho Catholic Register. In every aspect of this ministry, this position helps ensure that the Diocese's communications faithfully proclaim the Gospel with truth, charity, doctrinal fidelity, pastoral sensitivity, and professional excellence.

POSITION SUMMARY:
The Assistant Editor (English) of the Idaho Catholic Register performs as an ecclesial minister in support of the evangelizing mission of the Diocese of Boise. Under the direct supervision of the ICR Editor and the general leadership of the Director of Communications, the Assistant Editor (English) assists in advancing the communications ministry of the Diocese through the Idaho Catholic Register and other official diocesan print, digital, website, multimedia and social media communications.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
• Must have a working knowledge of and a strong commitment to the mission of the Diocese of Boise and be a practicing Roman Catholic in full communion with the Church.
• Must faithfully accept and live in communion with the teachings of the Catholic Church as authentically transmitted through Sacred Scripture, Sacred Tradition, and the Magisterium of the Church, and faithfully expressed in the Catechism of the Catholic Church.
• Must not publicly advocate or espouse any doctrine, teaching, or position inconsistent with the faith or moral teachings of the Roman Catholic Church.
• Demonstrates a thorough understanding of the teachings, mission, ministries, governance, and pastoral life of the Catholic Church.
• Demonstrates exceptional writing, editing, proofreading, interviewing, communication, and storytelling abilities.
• Demonstrates excellent command of grammar, spelling, journalistic standards, and AP Style.
• Demonstrates sound editorial judgment together with a commitment to theological, doctrinal, pastoral, editorial, and factual accuracy.
• Ability to prioritize and efficiently execute a broad scope of assignments while meeting deadlines, competing demands, and changing priorities.
• Ability to deal with frequent interruptions, changes, delays, or unexpected events.
• Ability to collaborate effectively with clergy, diocesan leadership, parishes, schools, ministries, volunteers, media representatives, and the public.
• Demonstrates strong organizational, planning, prioritization, and project management skills.
• Ability to utilize Adobe Creative Suite, Microsoft Office, website content management systems, digital publishing platforms, photography, and social media.
• Ability to utilize emerging communication technologies, including artificial intelligence, responsibly and ethically in a manner consistent with diocesan policy and Catholic teaching.
• Ability to communicate effectively in person, by telephone, video conference, and written correspondence.
• Ability to travel as needed and/or requested.
• Ability to meet qualifications of diocesan Safe Environment policies and successfully pass a criminal background check.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Researches, writes, edits, and proofs content for the Idaho Catholic Register, diocesan website, and other diocesan communications.
• Assists the ICR Editor with planning editorial content, publication schedules, and editorial priorities.
• Works directly with the ICR Editor to determine assignments and ensure the timely completion of editorial projects.
• Exercises sound editorial judgment in selecting, developing, and presenting news and feature content that reflects the mission, priorities, and pastoral life of the Diocese of Boise while maintaining the highest standards of journalistic integrity and fidelity to Catholic teaching.
• Assists with editing submissions from diocesan offices, parishes, schools, ministries, and outside contributors.
• Reviews assigned communications to ensure theological, doctrinal, pastoral, editorial, grammatical, and factual accuracy consistent with the teachings of the Catholic Church.
• Assists the ICR Editor in maintaining the editorial quality, integrity, and Catholic identity of the Idaho Catholic Register.
• Assists with preparing the Bishop's columns, pastoral messages, official diocesan statements, annual reports, directories, and special publications.
• Covers diocesan liturgies, events, conferences, schools, ministries, and other assignments throughout the Diocese.
• Creates and manages engaging content for the diocesan website, digital communications, email communications, and social media in collaboration with the Digital Media Coordinator.
• Assists with expanding the Diocese's digital communications, multimedia initiatives, and social media presence through informative, engaging, and evangelizing content.
• Supports the strategic communications goals and pastoral priorities established by the Director of Communications while assisting the ICR Editor in the planning, production, and editorial quality of the Idaho Catholic Register and other assigned communications.
• Assists with media relations, crisis communications, and special communication projects as assigned.
• Maintains productive relationships with parishes, diocesan offices, Catholic organizations, and community partners.
• Assists with annual diocesan publications, archiving, departmental planning, and other communication initiatives.
• Performs other tasks, projects, duties, and responsibilities assigned or delegated by the ICR Editor.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Experience
• Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Communications, English, Public Relations, Marketing, or a related field.
• Minimum of three (3) years of professional experience in journalism, communications, publishing, or a writing-related field.
• Experience in Catholic communications, diocesan ministry, parish ministry, Catholic education, or religious publishing preferred.
• Experience with Adobe Creative Suite, Microsoft Office, website content management systems, digital publishing, and social media.
• Photography, multimedia production, podcasting, and video editing experience is desirable.

Essential Physical Abilities
• Ability to perform essential duties without endangering self or other employees.
• Motor skills needed for equipment operation and general office/church duties.
• Sufficient personal mobility, agility, strength, and physical reflexes, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to operate office/church equipment for an extended period of time, to reach, stoop, bend, and stretch in filing materials, lift up to 25 pounds, and work in an office/church environment.
• Detects objects to identify proximity, depth and/or color and ability to comprehend and/or perform duties prescribed.
• Converse with others to express oneself and/or exchange information.
