Job Description

Job Summary:
The Director of Liturgy and Music leads the worship and music life of the parish, fostering vibrant, prayerful liturgies that form missionary disciples and celebrate the diversity of the parish community. This individual is responsible for coordinating the full liturgical cycle, including sacramental and special celebrations, overseeing all music ministry, and building strong liturgical teams. Rooted in the vision of the Catholic Diocese of Green Bay and committed to the New Evangelization, this role requires both theological depth and pastoral sensitivity.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities, Character:
Knowledge
• Bachelor's degree in theology, Liturgy, Music, or related field (Master's Preferred); or equivalent experience.
• Must be a practicing Catholic, a member in good standing of a Catholic parish, and be single, ordained, a professed religious or in a sacramental marriage and have a strong faith commitment, dedicated to the Gospel values and living a life of prayer and service.
• In-depth knowledge of Catholic liturgical norms and sacred music traditions for the Roman Rite.
• Familiarity with and commitment to applicable copyright laws for music, texts, and media.
• Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of Catholic-ecclesial life and structure, along with knowledge of church organization and operational procedures.
• Working knowledge of all desktop applications included in the Microsoft Office Suite and various web applications.

Skills & Abilities
• Proficient in piano/organ and vocal leadership; able to teach and direct choirs of varying skill levels.
• Demonstrable ability to motivate, recruit, and manage teams of volunteers with pastoral sensitivity.
• Excellent verbal and written communication, public speaking, and facilitation skills.
• Strong organizational skills; ability to manage multiple projects, implement large events, and meet deadlines.
• Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team-based pastoral setting.
• Culturally aware and committed to inclusive liturgical planning, Spanish language skills a plus.
• Ability to see the impact of a positive experience at Mass on evangelization and stewardship
• Adaptable in schedule, problem solving, and in high pressure or rapidly changing situations.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Embrace the mission and vision of the Catholic Diocese of Green Bay and work in accordance with Catholic Social Teachings and the moral and ethical values of the Catholic Church.
Mission Staff:
• Collaborate with the Pastor, Director of Evangelization and Discipleship, and other members of the parish mission staff in implementing the mission of the parish.
• Participate in the comprehensive planning, implementation, and evaluation of the parish's programs, goals, and objectives with a specific focus on music and liturgy.
• Serve as a professional resource to the Mission Team in the areas of liturgy and music.
Liturgical Leadership:
• Plan and oversee the full liturgical calendar, including Sundays, Holy Days, Triduum, sacraments, holy hours, and special services.
• Lead the parish Liturgy Team and facilitate collaborative planning with other Parish Mission Pillar Teams and staff.
• Liturgical Minister Management:
o Continue to build a strong volunteer minister base through effective recruiting, leadership, and ongoing formation - particularly in liturgy and discipleship.
o Manage, supervise, and schedule all liturgical ministers.
o Develop job descriptions, orientation, training, and performance reviews for liturgical ministers
o Ensures Safe Environment compliance with Diocesan guidelines for liturgical volunteers.
o Liturgical ministry roles include: Greeters, Ushers, EMEs, Sacristans, Altar Servers, and Lectors.
• Coordinate seasonal liturgical preparations and communicate with all stakeholders involved in liturgical celebrations.
o This includes coordinating with our church environment ministers.
• Develop and implement parish liturgical policies in collaboration with the pastor.
• Develop continuing formation in liturgy of team members, ministers, and the assembly at large.
• Maintain oversight of livestream liturgies, including technology and volunteer coordination.
• Ensure liturgical decisions are pastorally sound, theologically faithful, and evangelically effective-final approval of all liturgical decisions rests with the pastor.
Music Ministry:
• Select, prepare, and lead music for all parish liturgies in alignment with Catholic liturgical norms and the cultural makeup of the parish.
• Recruit, train, and schedule cantors, choirs, and instrumentalists of varying skill levels to develop a comprehensive music ministry in the parish.
• Form and direct choirs (adult, youth, etc.), schedule weekly rehearsals, and foster the spiritual growth of music ministers.
• Collaborate closely with the Liturgy Team to ensure music supports the liturgical season, theme, and diversity of the assembly.
• Maintain instruments, music library, worship aids, copyright licenses, and proper reporting.
Administrative Responsibilities:
• Develop and manage the liturgy and music budget in collaboration with the Pastor, Mission Staff, and Finance Council.
• Maintain stocks of liturgical materials and records of liturgical planning.
• Serve as a pastoral presence at parish-wide events, funerals, weddings, and key formation programs.
• Actively engage in parish evangelization and outreach efforts through liturgical ministry.

Physical/Visual/Mental Demands:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to handle objects, reach with hands and arms, and talk. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Position requires the ability to react to fast paced and demanding environments; verbally converse with individuals; climb stairs and sit for extended periods of time; move and lift objects of 20 to 30 pounds. Must be able to work with complicated and sometimes stressful situations. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision and distance vision.
Typical Working Conditions:
Person in this position will work in an inside office environment and church; would work alone at times and frequently with large groups often requiring multitasking and working with deadlines and details; normal hours would be 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday 8:00am-4:30pm. Evening and weekend hours are required.
Nature of Supervision Received:
Reports to Director of Evangelization and Discipleship, who leads the Mission Team staff. Incumbent must establish priorities and independently set daily objectives to meet deadlines and address urgent situations as they occur.
Judgment Exercised/Decisions Made:
Considerable judgment and independent decision making is required. Decisions can be complex in that the community has a diverse background of experiences that need to be taken into account when designing liturgy that meets them where they are and leads them to an encounter with Jesus. Analysis and accommodation of multiple staff, volunteers and parish organizations that are impacted by liturgical decisions. Requires ability to thoroughly investigate, analyze, create, and recommend the proper course of action. Judgment and tact must be used frequently.
