About the RoleThe Franciscan Monastery of the Holy Land in Washington, DC is a peaceful and prayerful place of pilgrimage and service, rooted in the Catholic faith and the Franciscan tradition. Our historic campus includes sacred spaces, gardens, and buildings that require thoughtful care and stewardship.
The Monastery is seeking a part-time Gift Shop Manager to support the Guardian of the Monastery in overseeing the daily operations of the store, ensuring a welcoming and organized environment. This role involves supervising both in-person and online sales, maintaining product quality and presentation, and managing financial and administrative tasks including overseeing gift shop inventory management.
This role requires work on Fridays, Saturdays, and two other weekdays to be determined. This is a part-time position offering benefits including health, dental, vision and a 403(b) plan, as well as the potential for meaningful, long-term work in a peaceful, faith-centered environment. Responsibilities
Gift Shop Management and Promotion:
o Open and close the Gift Shop.
o Sell merchandise, run cash register, count cash and credit card receipts daily.
o Keep the store clean and well-organized.
o Maintain merchandise supply and keep shelves well stocked.
o Manage the online Gift shop (photograph items, pulling sold items for shipping, adding new items, etc).
o Track, prepare and submit monthly activity and expenditures reports.
o Inspired by the Catholic liturgical calendar, set up attractive merchandise and retail displays in the Gift Shop and in other public areas of the Monastery, that tell stories from the Holy Land.
Gift Shop Storage and Inventory
o Clean and organize gift shop storage, including renumbering and renaming shelves, and finding storage solutions.
o Inventory existing stock by creating a database including item description, quantity, wholesale and retail price, resource and contact numbers, and date of purchase.
o Maintain barcode system that includes the name and shelf number where items are stored.
o Catalogue and inventory updates to the new system.
o Support pricing new items and updating prices of existing inventory.
Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
• 1-2 years of general retail shop or related experience (preferred).
• Excellent customer service and people skills.
• Basic technical, computer and software skills (email, Excel, Word) for monthly reporting and inventory management.
• Experience using Square platform for transactions and cash register/drawer management preferred.
• Experience with retail bar code and inventory management preferred.
• Ability to read, write, and speak English.
• Ability to communicate effectively with vendors and staff.
• Respectful demeanor suited to a religious environment.
• Employees must conduct themselves with integrity and act in a manner consistent with the official teachings, doctrines, laws and policies of the Roman Catholic Church.
• Employees will be required to complete the VIRTUS Training, which includes a background check and fingerprinting.

Work Environment:
This job operates in a professional office and store environment, and storage room. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate and conducive to perform required duties described in this job description.
Position Type and Expected Hours of Work:
This is a part-time position. Days and hours of work are varied, but will fall between 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Must be available to work on Fridays, Saturdays, and two other weekdays to be determined. Must be willing to work holidays as this is a busy time for the Monastery. Overtime will be paid for holiday work.
