Job Description
Purpose of Position:To provide field operations of grounds & maintenance for Diocesan Cemeteries, Bishop's residence, The Pastoral Center, Stites, & Regina Cleary. To offer and provide project support to Diocesan entities considering or undertaking building repairs, preventative and deferred maintenance, or construction projects that are beyond general upkeep or basic maintenance as needed and requested by in-house legal counsel. Assures all Diocesan policies and procedures are adhered to and followed.
Essential Duties/Responsibilities:
Maintenance & Grounds:
1. Coordinating and performing general maintenance of buildings, facilities, and equipment at Mount Olivet & Holy Cross Cemeteries, Bishop's residence, Stites, Regina Cleary, & Pastoral Center.
2. Cemetery management to include but not limited to:
• Layout of graves, markers, and foundations.
• Installing markers and constructing foundations.
• Digging and backfilling graves, preparing for graveside or columbarium committal.
• Routine maintenance of cemetery equipment.
• Coordinate general clean ups in the cemetery including but not limited to spring in anticipation of Memorial Day and fall in anticipation of winter.
• Scheduling and coordinating seasonal grounds crew at Mount Olivet.
• Collaboration with the Family Services Coordinator at Mount Olivet to schedule and conduct burials, inurnments, marker placement groundskeeping, maintenance, and repairs.
• Budget and cost projections to include work order and invoice management.
3. Operation of backhoe, trucks, tractors, and small equipment proficiently and safely.
4. Maintains operation and safety of all tools, equipment, and supplies.
5. Maintains operation and security of fuel storage equipment and pumps, monitors use and reports data monthly to Diocesan Business Office.
6. Responsible for the proper use and storage of all chemicals and equipment and attendant safety gear and training. Has complete knowledge of the materials and equipment used and keeps records, as necessary, of their use by employees.
7. Avoids waste by conserving resources and developing sound ecological practices.
8. Understands and applies applicable codes and regulations pertinent to property maintenance and grounds.
9. Outlines and maintains the following property management programs to include detailed and accurate records of each program:
• Landscape design and beautification - including herbicide, fertilization, plus lawn, tree and bush management, and irrigation plans and maintenance.
• Pest control - including pesticide and disposal,
• Winter/winterization preparations and protection.
• Roads and parking areas access and maintenance - including snow removal logs, property and use signage.
Parish Maintenance & Construction Project Support:
Under the direction and coordination of in-house legal counsel the following duties may be assigned as needed:
• Reviews with pastors all plans, specifications, and bid documents and provides appropriate recommendations.
• Performs on-site inspections and final walk throughs of projects.
• Understands and applies applicable codes and regulations pertinent to property maintenance and grounds.
Staff Supervision:
This position is responsible for the management and supervision of the Grounds Crew positions for Mt. Olivet Cemetery and Holy Cross Cemeteries. This includes scheduling, oversight, evaluation, team building and conflict management, and general management of assigned staff and responsibilities.

Education and/or Experience:
1. Minimum Requirements:
• High School Diploma or GED required.
• Valid Montana driver's license, and proof of insurance required.
• Minimum of 3 years of relevant experience in construction, building, grounds, and equipment repairs and maintenance; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Ability to safely operate a backhoe and other vehicles and equipment.
• Safe Environment Background Check & Training satisfactorily completed https://greatfalls.cmgconnect.org and on an ongoing basis as required.
2. Preference:
• An active practicing Roman Catholic in full communion with the Church is preferred but not required.
3. Knowledge, Ability, and Skill:
• Knowledge: Working knowledge of the techniques, materials and practices of landscaping, construction, and maintenance. Knowledge of MT laws on cemeteries and burial grounds.
Understanding or ability to learn the minimum requirements within the first 6 months of employment, the burial standards and practices of the Catholic Church.
• Ability: Ability to perform light to heavy physical duties; Ability to work independently in the performance of routine duties. Ability to lift heavy objects and perform strenuous work continuously under varying weather conditions. Ability to train personnel on the proper use of all assigned equipment.
• Skill: Skilled in the operation of all cemetery tools and equipment listed. Proficient computer skills.
Work Environment:
1. Work is performed:
• Outdoors/indoors and can include exposure to temperature extremes and inclement weather.
• The majority of work is usually performed outside, using loud equipment. Incumbent will use and be exposed to heavy equipment.
• Administrative work is performed inside with general office conditions. Operates a computer, telephone, and standard office equipment.
• The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.
• Travel between worksite locations will be required.
2. Physical Requirements:
While performing the duties of this job outside, the employee is frequently required to hear, smell, stand, walk, bend/stoop, lift, and drive motorized equipment. The work requires strenuous physical exertion including the occasional lifting of objects of up to 100 pounds. Requires good vision and the application of significant manual dexterity in combination with eye-hand coordination to use hand/power tools and operate equipment.
3. Has regular contact with the general public and Diocesan in-house counsel. Contact is in person, by phone and in writing, and generally involves the exchange of information.
