Job Description

Position Description

The President serves as Chief Executive Officer of the National Eucharistic Congress, responsible for the leadership, strategic direction and performance of the organization, and serving as its principal ambassador and steward of its mission. The President reports to the Bishop Chair of the Members of the Corporation and to the Board of Directors.

The role divides across three areas.

External Leadership and Mission Advancement, 60 to 65 percent of the role. The President is a compelling national voice for Eucharistic renewal, a trusted partner to bishops, priests and apostolate leaders, and NEC's senior relationship builder and fundraiser, personally cultivating and soliciting major donors, foundations and corporate sponsors.

Mission, Strategy and Governance, 20 to 25 percent. Discerning and leading the mission of Eucharistic renewal, ensuring theological and ecclesial fidelity across NEC's programming and public content, setting strategy with the Board, and partnering closely with the Chair and the Members.

Organizational and Team Leadership, 15 to 20 percent. Building and empowering an exceptional team, exercising financial stewardship and risk management, and providing executive leadership for the Road to 2029 and the successful execution of the 2029 National Eucharistic Congress.

NEC has recently created the position of Chief Operating Officer. The President provides vision and executive direction while the COO translates that direction into coordinated organizational action, so that the President leads the organization without becoming its chief day to day operator.

Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate is a practicing Catholic with a deep personal love for Jesus Christ in the Eucharist, docility to the Holy Spirit, and an evident commitment to the teaching and mission of the Catholic Church. The successful candidate will bring:

Significant executive or senior leadership experience

Strong relationships and credibility within the Catholic Church, and comfort working directly with bishops and senior ecclesial leaders

Significant fundraising ability and confidence making major financial asks

Strong public speaking, and the ability to inspire people around a compelling mission

Sound theological judgment, exercised in collaboration with appropriate theological and episcopal advisers

Strategic thinking, with the ability to translate vision into measurable priorities

Experience building, leading and empowering high performing teams

Strong financial and organizational acumen

Emotional maturity, humility, discretion and sound judgment

A leadership style marked by prayer, missionary zeal, collaboration, courage and personal integrity

Advanced education in theology, business, organizational leadership or a related discipline is desirable but not required where demonstrated experience and formation provide equivalent preparation.

Travel

Approximately 40 percent travel, primarily within the United States, for meetings with bishops, donors, sponsors, dioceses and partners, conferences, speaking engagements and Board activities. The role periodically requires evenings and weekends and may include occasional international travel.

About the Employer

The National Eucharistic Congress exists to draw everyone to encounter the Eucharistic Heart of Jesus and, through that encounter, to renew the life of the world.

NEC is a Congress movement rather than a periodic event. The historic Congress in Indianapolis in 2024 restored that movement in the United States, and the years since have carried its grace outward through pilgrimages, formation and partnership, gathering the Church toward the 11th National Eucharistic Congress in 2029.
