The Role
The Dean of Students will participate in the full human formation of students by complementing the academic and mission formation initiatives at Saint John Paul the Great Catholic High School ("JPG"). The Dean of Students is integral to holistic student formation. Guided by justice and charity, the Dean of Students makes explicit the connection between discipline and discipleship by promoting Christian virtue through accountability and fair behavior consequences. The Dean of Students safeguards the culture of the school by ensuring all disciplinary action is rooted in Christ and promotes the dignity of each individual student made in the image and likeness of God.
This position is regular, full-time, exempt and reports to and is evaluated by the Principal. This is a salaried position requiring a consistent commitment from 7:45 am-3:30 pm ("the school day") when school is in session. The Dean of Students will be required to attend key community events (such as Open House, graduations, etc.) as well as student activities. Evening and weekend work will be required to assist with special events, liturgies, sports, and some activities.
Candidate Profile & Responsibilities:
A strong candidate for this role must be a Catholic in good standing with the Catholic Church, who assents to the Church's teachings on all matters, with particular care for those concerning the nature of the human person, sexual ethics and sexual identity. The candidate shall possess a zeal for the Lord, living the faith in all aspects of life, and have an ability to build productive relationships with faculty, students and parents grounded in respect and charity.
Responsibilities:
-Oversee student supervision during non-class time (lunch, breaks, before and after classes)
-Track student behavior using FACTS Management System and communicate with students and parents regarding disciplinary action
-Issue and oversee detentions, including scheduling and managing supervision
-Manage and implement the school's disciplinary escalation policy; evaluate and develop best practices regarding disciplinary policies
-Meet with students regarding behavior and discipline; follow up with parents, teachers, and counselor, determine and implement appropriate consequences, monitor behavior contracts
-Oversee and track class attendance and tardies, and follow up with students and parents for unexcused absences and excessive tardiness
-Assign student lockers, assist in the creation of student schedules
-Coordinate supervision of co-curricular events and assist principal in assigning supervision for school events
-Oversee the daily routines and management of students, which includes bell schedule, announcements, dress code, etc.
-Support staff and faculty in classroom management and following up with student behavior concerns
-Contribute as a key member of the Academic and Formation leadership team
-Collaborate with the Principal to facilitate summer orientation and other staff
-Make uniform decisions and ensure consistent enforcement
-Maintain a teaching load of one class to maintain a direct connection to classroom practice
Qualifications:
-Bachelor's degree required; a Master's degree preferred
-A minimum of 5 years of measurable professional experience related to role responsibilities
-Competency in organizational skills, interpersonal skills, and communication, particularly proactive communication with parents and students
-Knowledge of Catholic social teaching, virtue ethics, and restorative justice practices
-Genuine love for working with youth and supporting their holistic development
-Prior leadership/supervision experience
-Strong conflict resolution skills
