Director of Finance Job DescriptionGeneral Overview
The Director of Finance leads financial operations for the Catholic Diocese of Biloxi, including Chancery offices, Catholic Charities, de l'Epee Deaf Center, and the Catholic Foundation of Biloxi. This role ensures effective financial planning, internal controls, and compliance with applicable laws while advising the bishop and senior leadership on finance-related matters. As an ex-officio member of the Diocesan Finance Council and the Catholic Foundation, the Director fosters professional working relationships with pastors and diocesan leaders.
While professional staff manages routine financial tasks, the Director is accountable for their oversight and efficiency. The primary focus is on strategic financial leadership, governance, and stewardship of Church assets, promoting a culture of accountability and transparency aligned with the Diocese's mission of fostering Discipleship in Christ.
• Leadership & Management:
o Provides strategic and operational leadership across entities like the Catholic Diocese of Biloxi, Catholic Charities, and others.
o Serves as the primary financial advisor to the bishop and senior leadership, covering budgeting, operations, risk management, and financial stewardship.
• Responsibilities:
o Manages resources through effective financial planning, internal controls, and reporting.
o Ensures accountability and transparency aligning with the Diocese's mission.
• Key Relationships:
o Develops professional relationships with clergy and administrators based on trust.
o Serves as an ex-officio member of essential financial bodies such as the Diocesan Finance Council.
• Canonical Appointment and Duties:
o Appointed by the bishop, requiring expertise in financial affairs and integrity.
o Administers diocesan goods and authorizes expenditures.
o Renders annual accounts to the finance council.
Reporting and Supervision
• Reporting:
o Reports directly to the bishop, collaborating with senior officials like the Vicar General.
• Supervision:
o Supervises and develops finance team personnel to ensure effective and efficient accounting operations.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
• Strategic Financial Management:
o Develops comprehensive financial strategies and monitors fiscal adherence.
o Leads cloud-based system enhancements for improved efficiency.
• Financial Oversight:
o Ensures precise financial reporting and strong internal controls.
o Directs budget processes to align assessments with diocesan objectives.
• Audit & Compliance:
o Oversee audit processes and ensure compliance with legal standards.
• Risk Management:
o Manage insurance, benefits, financial risk planning, investments, and asset stewardship.
Peripheral and Educational Responsibilities
• Peripheral Roles:
o Serves as an ex-officio member on financial stewardship boards.
• Educational Initiatives:
o Leads financial education programs for clergy and administrators.
Desired Minimum Qualifications
• Education & Experience:
o Bachelor's degree required, advanced degrees preferred.
o 7-10 years in financial management, particularly within complex nonprofit environments.
• Professional Skills:
o Strong financial knowledge, executive presence, and leadership capabilities.
o CPA certification is preferred.
