Job Description

Position Overview

Sts. Peter and Paul School is seeking a middle school teacher of science and mathematics - a teacher who sees these disciplines not as detached technical subjects, but as windows onto the order, beauty, and intelligibility of God's creation. This role is open to either a full-time or part-time arrangement, beginning in the 2026-2027 academic year.

The teacher we are seeking will help students discover that to study number and nature rightly is to be drawn, in awe, toward the Creator who made all things in wisdom. A teacher who will encourage students to engage in mathematics and the natural sciences, and inspire them to form their minds to perceive truth: mathematics trains the soul in logical reasoning, proportion, and abstract thought, while the sciences cultivate the habits of careful observation, humble wonder, and disciplined inquiry into the natural world. Together they make visible the deep harmony between faith and reason - a harmony the Catholic intellectual tradition has cherished for centuries.

The Role

The middle school science and mathematics teacher guides students toward mastery of the academic objectives proper to grades six through eight, while modeling for and revealing to students how the Catholic faith and the pursuit of virtue are integrated into the formation of the intellect; to help form young minds in the habits of attentive wonder, clear thinking, and reverence for truth - wherever it is found.

Responsibilities

Classroom & Instruction

Teach middle school mathematics (which may include pre-algebra, algebra, and geometry) and the natural sciences (life, earth, and physical sciences) in accordance with the SPP curriculum.

Implement the curriculum from a position of genuine mastery of the disciplines taught.

Design lessons that reveal how mathematics and the sciences draw the mind toward a deeper knowledge of God and a more perfect service of Him - helping students recognize, for example, the elegance of a mathematical proof, the order behind natural law, and the harmony between revealed truth and the truths of reason.

Deliver instruction and administer rubric-based assessments aligned to curricular objectives and appropriate for the age level taught.

Produce written lesson plans and keep them current each week.

Cultivate a joyful, orderly, and intellectually serious classroom marked by clear behavioral expectations, beauty, and faith.

Lead students in prayer at appropriate moments throughout the day.

Parent & Student Communication

Maintain accurate, up-to-date records of student performance.

Communicate regularly and personally with parents about each child's progress.

Send weekly class-wide emails to parents covering homework, school and class events, and anything else needed to help families support their children well.

School Life & Collaboration

Work closely with colleagues across the middle school to ensure students experience a formation that is integrated and cohesive across all disciplines.

Attend and contribute to weekly All-Faculty meetings.

Pursue ongoing professional development through opportunities provided by the school.

Participate actively in the liturgical and prayer life of the school.

Take part in school events both during and outside the school day, including Parent-Teacher Conferences, Open Houses, admissions events, and the annual Gala.

Assist in co-curricular activities as needed and desired.

The Ideal Candidate

A practicing Catholic in good standing, with a sincere love for the faith and an understanding of the deep complementarity between faith and reason in the Catholic intellectual tradition.

Genuine mastery of and enthusiasm for mathematics and the natural sciences - and the imagination to teach them as liberal arts rather than mere skill subjects.

Experience with and a love for middle school students, and an appreciation for the unique intellectual awakening of these years.

Enthusiasm for and familiarity with Catholic classical and liberal arts pedagogy.

The ability to model for students a life of Christian discipleship, virtue, and an unfeigned love of learning.

A positive outlook and a good sense of humor.

A Bachelor's degree in mathematics, a natural science, or a closely related field is required; an advanced degree is preferred.

Prior teaching experience is strongly preferred.

What We Offer

Competitive salary commensurate with education and experience (prorated for part-time positions)

Health insurance and a retirement plan through the Archdiocese of Los Angeles (for full-time faculty)

Paid holidays, PTO, and sick leave

A curriculum centered on Truth, Goodness, and Beauty

Daily Mass and regular Eucharistic adoration

Ongoing spiritual and intellectual formation through the Norbertine-founded Evermode Institute

Small class sizes and strong parental partnership

A mission-driven, supportive, and joyfully Catholic school culture

Additional Requirements

Faculty at Sts. Peter and Paul are required to sign a Statement of Faith. All faculty must also complete background screening, safe environment training, and mandated reporter training.
