Job Description

Title: Coordinator of Sacred Liturgy
Reports To: Pastor
Parishes: St. Liborius Catholic Parish, Steger, IL and
Saint Boniface Catholic Church, Monee, IL
Position Schedule: Part-Time, Non-Exempt, Benefit Ineligible
Monday-Sunday: 20-25 hours weekly as needed, following the liturgical schedule.
Friday: Off
Weekend hours.
Effective Date: July 1, 2025

JOB SUMMARY
The Coordinator of Sacred Liturgy/Sacristan helps to coordinate the celebration of the liturgy under the direction of the Pastor. This includes all Sunday liturgies occurring at Saint Liborius Catholic Church in Steger and working closely with the volunteers at Saint Boniface Catholic Church in Monee for those matters concerning Saint Boniface. The Sacristan will work closely with the Hispanic Liturgical Ministry at Saint Boniface and Mother Teresa Academy to make sure they have all they need to celebrate a reverent liturgy.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Sacristan will work with the Liturgical musicians and Pastor putting together a schedule of musicians and will approve check requests for the payment of musicians for all liturgies at all sights and submit these to the Administrative Assistant for processing.
• Make certain all common vestments at all locations are properly cared for including dry cleaning, n.b., liturgical vestments should not be washed in the washing machine.
• Make certain all sacred vessels are properly maintained, n.b., dish soap should never be used on chalices or ciboria.
• Unlocking and locking the church before and after all liturgies.
• Prepare the church for all liturgies Sundays, weekdays, funerals, weddings, and baptisms.
• Prepare all liturgical items for Holy Week, Christmas and major celebrations including binders, oils, candles, etc.
• Assist in the decoration of the sanctuary each liturgical season.
• Assist priests and deacons in the planning of weddings, funerals and baptisms as needed.
• Maintain liturgical supplies at all locations including hosts, wine, candles, etc.
• Set the Lectionaries for Mass.
• Make sure flowers are ordered for Christmas and Easter and all major celebrations. Review order with the Pastor prior to placing order. Manage delivery of flowers for major seasons.
• Prepare and assist with school Mass and other principle liturgical celebrations at Mother Teresa Academy.
• Prepare and assist with major liturgical celebrations held at Mother Teresa Academy.
• Make sure collection bags are in the usher's closet.
• Manage, schedule, and communicate with all liturgical ministries including ushers, EMHCs, lectors, altar servers, etc.
• Post the liturgical schedule (prepared by Administrative Assistant and Pastor) in the sacristy.
• Make sure the Sunday bulletin is in the church.
• Address any other liturgical needs as stipulated by the Pastor.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Practicing Catholic who understands and supports the teachings and dogma of the Roman Catholic Church and who acts an example and serves as role model in their personal life.
• Has a sense of God's call to this ministry and carries out the ministry in humble service to the parish.
• Since this is a ministerial position, must be a practicing Roman Catholic in good standing and must know, profess and act consistently in accordance with the doctrinal and moral teachings of the Catholic Church and with the mission, philosophy, objectives, and policies of St. Liborius, Saint Boniface, and the Diocese of Joliet.
• Bachelor's degree in theology or credit hours in Catholic liturgy or a related field preferred.
• Communicates in a professional, positive, and supportive manner at all levels.
• Displays a true Christian example of patience, compassion and understanding.
• Has proven skills in administrative work and interaction with others.
• Be a live voice greeting calls in a warm, efficient manner.
• Few calls should reach General Delivery and when they do, they are promptly returned. The return call acknowledges receipt, answers inquiry and or informs of routing to appropriate staff.
• Proficiency in relating to and working cooperatively with parish members.
• Strength in administrative and organizational skills.
• Commitment to continuous personal growth in spirituality and education.
• Demonstrated ability to set priorities and organize work effectively and efficiently including developing and maintaining effective record keeping systems.
• Ability to compose correspondence, minutes, and reports.
• Ability to honor and maintain absolute confidentiality both within and outside of the office in regard to any and all parish business.
• Ability to relate to the diverse universe of the parish in a positive and professional manner.

SALARY
Salary range is $16.00 - $20.00 per hour, depending on experience and qualifications.

BENEFITS

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
• This is a part-time, non-exempt, unbenefited position.
• Working presence in the church each week as required by the liturgical schedule or as scheduled by the Pastor.
• Flexibility of schedule when needed and must be approved in advance (except for illness) by the Pastor.
• Reliable transportation is required.
• Employment or voluntary activities or opportunities outside the parish must not conflict with normal liturgical responsibilities or other investments of time standard to the position defined in WORK SCHEDULE STATUS above.
• Miles traveling between church or school will be reimbursed at the rate stipulated by the IRS, recorded by the Sacristan, and approved by the Pastor.
• Reimbursement for continuing education credits specifically associated with the Sacred Liturgy up to $500 annually as approved by the Pastor.
