Position Summary
The Junior DevOps Engineer is a key member of the Technology Department responsible for supporting, automating, and optimizing Kolbe Academy's IT infrastructure and systems. This role bridges traditional systems administration with modern automation and software development practices, ensuring the reliable, secure, and efficient operation of Kolbe Academy's technology environment.
The Junior DevOps Engineer will assist in maintaining infrastructure, developing automation solutions, and building integrations between internal systems and third-party platforms. The ideal candidate brings a strong technical foundation, a willingness to learn, and a commitment to security best practices in support of Kolbe Academy's mission.
Key Responsibilities
Infrastructure & Systems Administration
Assist in the installation, configuration, and maintenance of cloud infrastructure, servers, and network systems.
Collaborate with senior technical staff to implement and maintain security measures that protect company data, systems, and user information.
Assist with system deployments and maintenance, potentially outside of regular business hours as needed.
Follow and promote security best practices including least-privilege access, secure coding standards, and routine vulnerability assessments.
Automation & Development
Develop and maintain scripts and automation tools to reduce manual processes and improve operational efficiency.
Build and maintain API integrations between internal systems and third-party platforms and services.
Support ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) workflows to facilitate reliable data exchange between systems.
Support the maintenance of data integrity across integrated platforms and systems.
Participate in code reviews and collaborate with technical staff to develop secure, maintainable, and well-documented code.
Help Desk & User Support
Provide second-tier technical support to end users, resolving escalated hardware, software, and systems issues.
Assist the help desk as demand requires and document solutions for future reference.
Qualifications
Required
Associate's degree in Computer Information Systems, Computer Science, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
Experience with scripting languages such as Python, PowerShell, or Bash.
Experience with networking technologies such as TCP/IP, DNS, and VPNs.
Familiarity with REST APIs and experience building or consuming API integrations.
Familiarity with security best practices and experience assisting in the identification and remediation of vulnerability findings.
Strong problem-solving, troubleshooting, and organizational skills.
Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a remote team environment.
Preferred
Experience with cloud platforms such as AWS or Microsoft Azure.
Familiarity with containerization tools such as Docker or Kubernetes.
Familiarity with ETL concepts and data pipeline tooling.
Experience with version control systems such as Git.
Experience in a K-12 or education technology environment.
Job Requirements
Work outside of regular business hours may be necessary during planned downtime for system implementations and maintenance, as well as to support the start of school.
Some limited travel may be required for in-person team meetings or to support on-premises hardware.
Technological Requirements
A reliable, high-bandwidth Internet connection.
A smartphone or device capable of responding to MFA prompts.
Physical Demands
This job requires the ability to sit or stand at a computer desk for a complete workday as well as the ability to use a mouse and keyboard. This job also requires the ability to lift heavy computing equipment (approximately 50 pounds).
