Job Description

POSITION OVERVIEW:

The Campus Minister for Brooklyn College Newman Center supports the Director of Campus Ministry & Office of Campus Ministry in the faithful implementation of the Newman Center's mission and vision to students in Brooklyn. The Campus Minister is responsible for supporting the execution of the strategic campus ministry program, which looks to foster a vibrant Catholic community for students at Brooklyn College. The Campus Minister serves the students, faculty, and staff at Brooklyn College by cultivating a vibrant, welcoming, and faith-filled community. Grounded in the Catholic tradition, the minister fosters spiritual growth, formation in discipleship, and liturgical participation. The role requires a dynamic leader capable of engaging a diverse, urban commuter campus population.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Cooperate in the execution of the annual strategic campus ministry plan.
• Help oversee the Brooklyn College Newman Student Leadership Teams.
• Oversee the execution of key ministry events, including Fall Outreach, semesterly retreats, service programs, social activities, etc.
• Be present at key weekly ministry events, including some evenings and weekends.
• Pastoral Care & Evangelization: Provide pastoral accompaniment and spiritual mentorship to students of diverse backgrounds. Implement creative outreach strategies to engage the broader campus community.
• Program Leadership: Plan and execute weekly fellowship events, faith-sharing groups, and annual spiritual retreats. Coordinate community service opportunities in light of Catholic social teaching.
• Liturgical Coordination: Prepare and organize weekly and Sunday campus Masses, reconciliation services, and Eucharistic adoration. Recruit, train, and supervise student liturgical ministers (lectors, music ministry, EMHCs).
• Faith Formation: Facilitate the Order of Christian Initiation of Adults (OCIA) and confirmation prep for students. Lead catechetical sessions, Bible studies, and discussions on contemporary faith topics.
• Administration & Collaboration: Manage the daily operations, budget, and calendar of the Newman Center. Maintain active communication with the Diocese of Brooklyn and local parishes. Serve as the official liaison to the Brooklyn College administration and student government.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
• Faith & Witness: Must be a practicing Catholic in good standing with a deep love for the Church and its mission.
• Education: Bachelor's degree in Theology, Pastoral Ministry, Religious Studies, or a related field required (Master's degree preferred).
• Experience: Minimum of 2-3 years of experience in youth ministry, campus ministry, or parish leadership.

REQUIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
• Ability to work with diverse populations and create a welcoming environment.
• Ability to work independently on projects.
• Ability to collaborate with the Chaplain/Director of Campus Ministry, staff missionaries, and student leaders.
• Ability to creatively plan and implement programs on a college campus.
• Familiarity with media platforms and programs, i.e., campus website, Facebook, Instagram
• Ability to work nights, weekends, some holidays, and special events.
• Must have facilitating, counseling, listening, and leadership skills.
• Excellent communication skills.
• Bi-lingual English/Spanish preferred.
• Must be proficient with Microsoft Office products, including Word, Excel, Outlook, Publisher, and PowerPoint.
• Strong public speaking, interpersonal communication, and organizational skills. Proficiency in social media marketing and digital communication tools.
• Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends for student events and Masses.

FLEXIBLE SCHEDULING STATEMENT
The Campus Minister role requires a flexible ministry schedule that may vary based on the academic calendar, student programming, liturgical needs, retreats, service opportunities, diocesan events, and the pastoral needs of the Brooklyn College Newman Center community. Evening and weekend availability is an expected part of the position and should be planned in consultation with the Director of Campus Ministry. The employee and supervisor should regularly review the ministry calendar to balance weekday responsibilities with required presence at student events, Masses, retreats, and other mission-related activities. Flexible scheduling should be managed in a manner that supports the mission of Campus Ministry, maintains appropriate accountability, and reflects the full-time ministerial nature of the position.
