Job Description
Director of Finance, Accounting and OperationsPosition Summary
The Director of Finance, Accounting and Operations provides strategic leadership and oversight for all financial, administrative, and operational functions of the parish and school. This position is responsible for ensuring sound financial management, strong internal controls, and compliance with diocesan policies and applicable regulations.
Working closely with the Pastor and School Principal, the Director supports long-term financial sustainability while supervising the daily accounting and administrative functions carried out by the Finance Assistant.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Leadership and Planning
• Oversee all financial operations of the parish and school
• Develop and manage annual operating budgets in collaboration with the Pastor and School Principal
• Monitor cash flow and long-term financial sustainability
• Provide financial analysis, insights, and recommendations to parish leadership
• Assist with tuition rate setting and major financial decisions
• Support financial planning for capital projects and campaigns
Financial Reporting
• Prepare and review monthly financial statements
• Develop reports and materials for the Finance Council
• Present financial information at Finance Council meetings
• Produce semi-annual parish financial reports
• Submit required financial reports to the Diocese
Oversight of Accounting Operations
• Review bank reconciliations, journal entries, and general ledger activity
• Approve invoices and disbursements prior to payment
• Review credit card reconciliations and financial activity
• Monitor restricted funds, endowments, and donor-designated gifts
• Review offertory reports and contribution records
Compliance and Internal Controls
• Ensure compliance with diocesan policies and governmental regulations
• Prepare the Internal Control Survey, Schedule K, and Letter to the Bishop
• Coordinate diocesan and independent audits or financial reviews
• Maintain and strengthen financial policies and internal controls
• Review tax filings and compliance reports
Payroll and Personnel Oversight
• Oversee bi-weekly payroll processing
• Manage employee leave tracking through payroll systems
• Coordinate with diocesan HR and payroll departments
• Ensure personnel file compliance and proper documentation
School and Scholarship Oversight
• Oversee tuition administration processes
• Collaborate with school administration on tuition and financial aid
• Ensure compliance with the NC Opportunity Scholarship program
Department Leadership
• Supervise and support the Finance Assistant
• Serve as financial liaison to the Pastor, school leadership, staff, and Diocese
• Respond to financial inquiries from parishioners and staff
Qualifications
Education & Credentials
• Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field required
Experience
• 5 + years of progressively responsible experience in accounting or financial management
• Experience managing full-cycle accounting operations
• Proven background in budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis
• Prior supervisory experience required
Technical Skills
• Strong knowledge of GAAP and financial reporting standards
• Experience with internal controls, audits, and compliance
• Proficiency in accounting and payroll systems (e.g., Paylocity, QuickBooks, or similar)
• Advanced Excel and financial reporting skills
Leadership & Professional Skills
• Strong leadership and organizational abilities with attention to detail
• Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
• Ability to communicate financial information clearly to non-financial audiences
• High level of integrity and ability to maintain confidentiality
• Ability to manage multiple priorities independently
