Job Description

The Catholic Diocese of Richmond is seeking a Director of Campus Ministry to serve the Catholic Campus Ministry at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, VA.

The Director of Campus Ministry ensures the various aspects of ministering to the university campus are carried out. The people served include students (primarily Catholic), staff, and faculty of the university as well as alumni and parents on occasion. Most of those people are served through liturgies, programs, and pastoral care offered by campus ministry. The Director also works closely with several offices through James Madison University as a resource for their programs and concerns.

As a focus of their ministry, the Director is responsible for the development and implementation of a comprehensive campus ministry program including aspects of Evangelization, Word, Worship, Community and Service that are consistent with Diocesan standards and norms.

The Director responds to the needs and supports the mission of the Catholic Community by being a prophetic voice on campus, acting as liaison between the ministry and the university administrations. The Director ensures a close working relationship with the local parish, Blessed Sacrament.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Advocate for the Catholic Church, especially in areas of morality and ethics, to the University community.
2. Respond to the pastoral needs of students, faculty, and staff as needed.
3. Develop, implement, and direct a comprehensive campus ministry program by:
a. Assisting with the faith formation of the community; serving as primary catechist for formation programs
b. Facilitating community building
c. Developing student leadership and being a resource for student leaders.
d. Supervising student programs and activities (including but not limited to music ministry, bible studies, faith sharing groups, retreats, community service projects, alternative break trips)
e. Assisting the Campus Ministry Chaplain with liturgical ministries
f. Providing logistical support, as necessary, for activities and events proposed by the student leadership.
4. Provide supervision to and oversight of the campus ministry team
5. Maintain the general upkeep of the Catholic Campus Ministry facility.
6. Oversee Catholic Campus Ministry financial accounts, annual budget, and development program to ensure the financial viability of campus ministry.
7. Develop and consult with campus ministry advisory boards to assist with implementation of campus ministry program.
8. Collaborate with the Diocesan Office for Evangelization by participating in diocesan events (i.e. Encounter with Christ and Campus Ministry Summit) and campus ministry staff events (i.e. Fall Meeting and Spring Retreat and Conference).
9. Act as a liaison between the campus ministry and Blessed Sacrament, as well as other local parishes.
10. Perform all other duties as assigned.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
This is a full-time (minimum of 40 hours per week), exempt professional ministry position. Night and weekend work is necessary primarily during the academic year. Regular, weekly schedule will be required. A physical presence on the local campus is required on a weekly basis as well. The position also requires travel to campus ministers' meetings and other diocesan events, reimbursable through the approved budget. The Director will work regularly with the Diocesan Associate Director of the Office for Evangelization, the Campus Ministry Chaplain, faculty, staff and students of James Madison University as well as other Diocesan Campus Ministers.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge/Skills:
• Practicing Catholic in good standing
• Through knowledge of Church teachings and theology with the ability to relate that knowledge to young adults in a campus ministry setting
• Fluent in relevant church documents pertaining to ministry and evangelization, specifically:
o Evangelii Nuntiandi (Evangelization in the Modern World)
o Redemptoris Missio (Mission of the Redeemer)
o Catechesi Tradendae (Catechesis in our Times)
o Evangelii Gaudium (Joy of the Gospel)
o Disciples Called to Witness
o Renewing the Vision
o Sons & Daughters of Light
• Knowledge of adolescent and young adult development, spiritual development and application
• Ability to articulate a clear ministry vision and set appropriate milestones to accomplishing the vision
• Exceptional people skills
• Ability to work well in a multi-faith and multicultural settings
• Ability to empathize with others
• Self-motivated, works easily alone or with others
• Ability to maintain confidentiality
• Detail-oriented and highly organized
• Ability to multitask and prioritize tasks in an office setting and at events

• Strong computer skills

Education Required:
• A minimum of a bachelor's degree (master's preferred) in a field related to theology or pastoral ministry is required.
• 3-5 years of prior experience in pastoral work, preferably campus ministry.
