Job Description
Position SummaryThe Student Music Ministry Coordinator supports the vision and execution of the Catholic Student Center's liturgical music ministry with a primary focus on student-centered liturgies and retreats.
The Coordinator recruits, forms, and mentors student musicians, fostering a welcoming and prayerful music ministry that encourages active participation, emotional depth, and spiritual engagement among the congregation. Through consistent presence and relationship-building, the Coordinator plays a key role in developing student leaders within the music ministry and supporting their musical and faith formation.
Working in close collaboration with the Director of Music Ministry, Chaplain, and ministry team, the Student Music Ministry Coordinator helps ensure a unified and cohesive vision for music at the CSC, integrating students and community members into a shared ministry.
Duties and Responsibilities
Liturgical Music Planning and Leadership
Plan, lead, and provide musical leadership for student-centered liturgies, including the 4:30 p.m. Student Mass, Tuesday Night Mass, and the Awakening Retreat.
Provide musical leadership for weddings and funerals as assigned, in coordination with the Director of Music Ministry.
Select music that is liturgically appropriate, pastorally sensitive, and well-suited to student worship.
Collaborate with the Director of Music Ministry and Chaplain to ensure music supports the liturgical calendar and pastoral goals of the CSC.
Ensure music offered for student liturgies reflects a quality and care consistent with the CSC's overall music ministry.
Choir and Musician Formation
Recruit, form, rehearse, and mentor student musicians, cantors, and instrumentalists.
Encourage and develop student leadership within the music ministry through mentorship and skill-building.
Coordinate and lead rehearsals to ensure students are prepared for liturgies and retreats.
Prepare, organize, and distribute weekly music materials for student musicians, ensuring accurate, complete, and timely resources for rehearsals and liturgies.
Foster a rehearsal environment rooted in prayer, hospitality, musical growth, and spiritual formation.
Support students' musical development through constructive feedback and encouragement.
Program Leadership and Administration
Support the Director of Music Ministry in carrying forward a unified vision for the CSC music ministry.
Work collaboratively with the Director of Music Ministry, Chaplain, Director of Ministry, and CSC staff.
Assist with scheduling, communication, and coordination related to student music ministry.
Help integrate student musicians into the broader CSC music ministry, avoiding separation between "student" and "Friends" music cultures.
Provide coverage for the Director of Music Ministry when they are on vacation, ill, or otherwise unable to fulfill their duties, including rehearsal leadership and liturgical accompaniment as needed.
Assist in maintaining music resources and digital materials related to student liturgies.
Hours and Seasonal Expectations
Part-time position averaging approximately 15-20 hours per week during the academic year.
Minimal hours required during June, July and Washington University semester breaks.
Evening and weekend hours required to support liturgies, rehearsals, and retreats.
Professional Qualifications
College degree preferred or equivalent professional experience demonstrating a high level of musicianship and leadership.
Demonstrated excellence as a musician and music leader, with the ability to bring fresh vision, creativity, and artistic energy to a student-centered music ministry.
Strong proficiency in piano or guitar, with the musical skill and leadership presence necessary to support vibrant, prayerful congregational worship.
Demonstrated experience coordinating, leading, and mentoring musicians and singers of varied ages, skill levels, and backgrounds.
Ability to cultivate musical excellence while remaining pastorally sensitive and accessible to volunteer musicians.
Familiarity with liturgical or worship music in a Catholic or Christian context, with openness to growth and formation within Catholic liturgical practice.
Experience in campus ministry, parish ministry, or other faith-based settings is required.
Knowledge, Skills and Attributes
Highly detail-oriented with strong organizational and time-management skills.
Outstanding interpersonal and relational skills, particularly in working with students.
Strong problem-solving abilities and capacity to manage multiple priorities.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Demonstrated sensitivity to professional ethics, confidentiality, and diversity; treats all individuals with dignity and respect.
Collaborative in team settings while also able to work independently and exercise sound judgment.
Comfortable working in fast-paced, time-sensitive, or high-pressure environments
Proficient in Microsoft Office and Google Workspace applications.
Willingness to support and uphold the mission, values, and teachings of the Catholic Church; practicing Catholic is preferred.
