Job Description

Villa Maria Academy Lower School (an all-girls Catholic academy) is seeking an enthusiastic and knowledgeable Middle School Social Studies Teacher to inspire students in grades 6-8 through engaging instruction, inquiry-based learning, and historical analysis. The successful candidate will guide students in developing historical thinking skills while fostering an appreciation for diverse cultures, historical events, and the connections between the past and present.

Students will learn through an online textbook, primary and secondary source documents, collaborative activities, research projects, discussions, and other instructional resources designed to promote critical thinking and active engagement.
There are two sections for each grade level.

Responsibilities

Grade 6: Eastern Hemisphere Geography and Culture
• Teach the geography, cultures, religions, economies, and historical development of regions throughout the Eastern Hemisphere.
• Help students understand the relationships between geography, culture, and human societies.
• Incorporate maps, data analysis, current events, and cultural studies into instruction.
• Students also complete a Heritage Day project in the spring which celebrates their individual nationalities and traditions.

Grade 7: United States History - Discovery Through the Civil War
• Teach United States history from early exploration and settlement through the Civil War.
• Explore the political, economic, social, and cultural factors that shaped the nation.
• Engage students in analyzing historical documents and evaluating multiple perspectives on significant events.

Grade 8: United States History - Civil War Through Modern America
• Teach United States history from the Civil War and Reconstruction through contemporary times.
• Examine major historical developments, including industrialization, immigration, world wars, civil rights movements, and modern political and social issues.
• Encourage students to connect historical events to present-day challenges and opportunities.
The instructor would additionally have a 7th grade homeroom and grade partner, while working closely with the middle school team in scheduling and departmental classes.

Salary is commensurate with expereince.
