Job Description
Director of Internal CommunicationsCross Catholic Outreach is a Catholic ministry with an ecumenical staff of Catholic, Protestant, and Eastern Orthodox believers working in unity to provide food, water, housing, education, orphan support, medical care, micro-enterprise, and disaster relief and the love of our Lord Jesus Christ to the poorest of the poor in more than 30 countries around the world. Position Summary
The Director of Internal Communications provides enterprise leadership for Cross Catholic Outreach's internal communication strategy. This role establishes vision, governance, and performance standards for how the ministry informs, aligns, and engages employees across a geographically dispersed workforce.
The Director partners closely with senior leadership to translate strategy, mission, and organizational priorities into clear, compelling narratives. This leader ensures communication is understood, aligned, and operationalized across departments.
This role oversees internal communication platforms, messaging frameworks, cascade enablement, and measurement systems, while leading and developing a small communications team.
The Director plays a critical role in strengthening organizational clarity, protecting culture during growth, and ensuring that Cross's Mission, Vision, and Values are consistently reflected in how we communicate.
This position may require occasional domestic and/or international travel to attend meetings, trainings, conferences, or organizational events. Travel may be conducted by airplane, automobile, bus, or other reasonable means. Travel frequency is expected to be limited and scheduled in advance when possible.
This role requires the ability to perform standard office functions, including prolonged sitting, standing, and computer use. Occasional lifting, carrying, or moving materials weighing up to 20 pounds may be required.
Qualifications
Education Required
Bachelor's degree in communications, journalism, or related field required.
Experience Required
• 10+ years of progressive internal communications experience.
• Minimum of 2-5 years in a leadership capacity.
• Experience leading internal communications for organizations with 200+ geographically dispersed employees.
• Demonstrated experience advising senior executives.
• Experience building governance models and communication strategies in organizations at an early to mid-size maturity.
Knowledge & Skills Required
• Expertise in change communication and organizational alignment.
• Exceptional executive-level writing and editing ability.
• Strong analytical capability; experience developing KPIs and measurement frameworks.
• Familiarity with Microsoft 365 ecosystem, SharePoint intranet governance, and project management platforms (i.e. Teamwork, Asana).
• Demonstrated ability to balance big-picture strategy and operational oversight.
• Strong influencing skills across senior leaders and cross-functional stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership
• Develop and execute the ministry's internal communications strategy aligned to enterprise priorities.
• Serve as strategic advisor to the President and senior leadership on internal messaging, change communications, and organizational alignment.
• Craft and review executive communications including leadership updates, talking points, presentations, speeches, video scripts, and ministry-wide announcements.
• Lead change communication efforts during periods of organizational growth, restructuring, or strategic shift.
• Establish and maintain internal communication governance standards, processes, and approval frameworks.
Messaging, Platforms, & Measurement
• Develop messaging frameworks and communication guidelines to elevate standards across the organization.
• Ensure clarity, consistency, theological integrity, and alignment with Catholic Social Justice principles.
• Provide oversight and strategic direction for CrossNet (SharePoint intranet), including long-term roadmap, governance model, and technology evolution.
• Oversee communication calendar (Asana) to ensure message prioritization and sequencing.
• Establish and track KPIs related to employee understanding, engagement, cascade effectiveness, and channel performance.
• Partner with Human Resources Development on annual Employee Communication Survey strategy, analysis, and executive reporting.
• Develop long-term strategic plans and budgets for communication platforms, tools, and technologies.
Organizational Enablement
• Equip managers with structured cascade toolkits and feedback mechanisms.
• Design leader communication training to improve frontline messaging delivery.
• Partner with HR Development and other departments to ensure alignment between culture initiatives and communication strategy.
• Provide executive-level insights on communication risk, message fatigue, and alignment gaps.
• Drive a culture of continuous improvement grounded in analytics and stakeholder feedback.
Team Leadership
• Lead, coach, and develop internal communication team members.
• Set performance standards, quality expectations, and workflow processes.
• Clarify role delineation between strategic and executional responsibilities.
• Foster a culture of excellence, responsiveness, and proactive communication planning.
