Job Description
SUMMARY The staff person is responsible for leading and implementing a comprehensive development/fundraising program in support of the Roman Catholic Franciscan Friars' work in the Holy Land and in Washington, DC. The Franciscan Friars care for the Christian shrines in the Holy Land and for the people in the Holy Land through schools and social services for children, families, refugees, and others in need. The Franciscan Monastery in Washington, DC is home to a community of Friars who support both local and Holy Land programs. The Director of Development is responsible for the annual giving, direct mail, events, grant writing, foundation and corporate relations, major gifts and planned giving programs that fund this work.WORK LOCATION AND SCHEDULE The Development Director will work in person from the office at the Franciscan Monastery during core business hours of 9:00 am to 5:00 pm EST. This position requires some evening and weekend work to meet with donors and attend events, and work schedules can be flexible to accommodate this.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES The Development Coordinator is responsible for the day-to-day operational management and implementation of all activities pertaining to fundraising. General areas of responsibilities include annual giving, direct mail, events, grant writing, foundation and corporate relations, major gifts, and planned giving. Specific job responsibilities include:
o Create annual fundraising plan within two months and a 3-year fundraising plan within one year.
o Manage the Pontifical Good Friday Collection.
o Manage the Monastery and Commissariat's fundraising programs, database, vendors, and future staff.
o Manage and implement fundraising and friend-raising events, including the annual Mass and benefit Dinner, Spring Luncheon, Pilgrimage Reunion, and other small cultivation talks, discussions, and events.
o Staff and work with the Fundraising Committee and serve as a liaison between this committee and the friars.
o Coordinate and support the fundraising efforts and schedules of the friars, volunteers, consultants, and others.
o Reestablish a coordinated, comprehensive major gifts program and identify, research, cultivate, solicit, and steward major donors. Prepare friars and lead volunteers to meet with, cultivate and solicit major gifts.
o Reestablish the giving circle and roll into new major gifts program.
o Implement a planned giving program plan.
o Leverage pilgrimages to deepen donors' connection to the mission of the Monastery.
o Ensure messages in annual giving, major gifts, direct mail, and other activities are consistent, accurate and connect recipients to the work of the friars in Washington, DC and in the Holy Land.
o Run fundraising reports and evaluate successes.
o Participate in staff meetings and other activities as required.
o Other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE Bachelor's degree from a four-year college or university and at least five years nonprofit fundraising experience.
LANGUAGE SKILLS Strong written and verbal communication skills. Ability to read, analyze and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from a variety of audiences. Ability to communicate with constituents on the telephone, in person and in writing.
