Job Description

Holy Spirit Catholic Church is a vibrant and growing Catholic parish located on Johns Island, just minutes from historic Charleston and the South Carolina coast. We are seeking a faith-filled, talented, and collaborative Director of Music Ministry to lead and develop a comprehensive sacred music program that inspires prayer, fosters congregational participation, and supports the beauty of Catholic worship.

This is an exciting opportunity for a musician who values both the rich traditions of the Church and the pastoral art of engaging a diverse congregation. The Director of Music Ministry will work closely with the Pastor and parish staff to cultivate a prayerful and excellent liturgical music program while mentoring choir members, cantors, and instrumentalists in their service to the Church.

Position: Full time; requires evening and weekend hours; reports to the Pastor

Position Overview

Holy Spirit Catholic Church is seeking a spirit filled Director of Music Ministry, who can lead the congregation in worship, and who helps and allows others to also develop their musical gifts. This role is responsible for the planning, coordination and implementation of a comprehensive music program to facilitate the full and active participation of the congregation in the Catholic liturgical life of the parish.

Key Responsibilities

Music Ministry: Direct and perform music at all weekend Masses, all Holy Days, Parish Retreats, Penance services and any other parish sponsored events that require music such as weddings, funerals, etc. Select and prepare musical accompaniments and worship aids for all liturgies and services, assist and support local community-based activities that utilize parish music equipment and/or facilities, and choose, maintain and update music licenses as appropriate.

Choir Recruitment and Leadership: Recruit and teach adult and children choir members and cantors (SATB music); conduct and lead weekly structured choir and cantor rehearsals.

Musical instrumentation: Ongoing review and overall supervision for maintenance of all music equipment (piano, organ, sound system).

Budget Assistance: Oversee preparation of the annual music budget in coordination with Parish Finance Council.

Qualifications

Education: Bachelor's degree in Music or related field with a strong knowledge of Catholic worship; minimum 3 years of related experience in music ministry.

Practicing Catholic in good standing.

Technical Skills: Proficiency in playing the organ and piano at a professional level; proficiency in conducting and singing. Experience with traditional Catholic (Gregorian Chant) music to contemporary praise and worship. Proven ability to and willingness to seamlessly move choir and parishioners from traditional to contemporary musical liturgies.

Communication: Ability to work collaboratively with the Parish leadership team, Ministry leaders, cantors, choir and other instrumentalists. Attend weekly team meeting with Pastor and supportive staff to ensure everyone remains aligned on priorities. Demonstrates a collaborative spirit and openness to constructive feedback from clergy, staff, and parishioners.
