Job Description
POSITION SUMMARYThe Rosa Parks Children and Youth Programs (RPCYP), a ministry of the Capuchin Soup Kitchen (CSK), seeks to stretch the minds of young people, stimulate their creativity, and explore with them alternatives to violence. The Academic Assistant will support participants in their education goals by tutoring and assisting the Academic Specialist with activities related to the program. This part-time position may also be asked to help with summer camps, field trips and other special activities.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• Demonstrate, exemplify and support the Capuchin charism and the Province's Mission, Vision and Values throughout all professional responsibilities and activities.
• Assist Academic Specialist in developing lesson plans, goals and objectives for participants.
• Assist with office tasks as needed.
• Assist participants in developing their reading and comprehension skills.
• Work with participants to ensure homework and projects are completed.
• Be available to assist in all CSK events and programs.
• Comply with Province and CSK policies, procedures, guidelines and standards.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
• Effective communication, problem solving, interpersonal and organizational skills
• Ability to maintain confidentiality and travel locally
• Effective Microsoft Office skills
• Ability to lift and move up to 30 pounds
• Ability to be welcoming and professional
• Ability to relate effectively to youth of all ages in a central city environment
• Must be able to work a flexible schedule, including late afternoons/early evenings and some Saturdays
• Knowledge of social and economic variables that may affect youth
EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
• High School Diploma or equivalent
• Experience in classroom setting, tutoring or mentoring youth
• Must complete Archdiocese of Detroit's "Protecting God's Children" training or provide evidence (e.g., certificate) of prior completion before hire
WORKING CONDITIONS
• Standard office and academic environment and equipment
• May be required to stand and sit for long periods of time, walk, use hands and fingers, reach, climb, balance, stoop, bend, kneel, crouch and crawl
• Exposure to and use of art and cleaning chemicals
• Must be on site to perform job duties
