MISSION AND PURPOSEThe mission of St. John's Catholic Newman Center is to equip college students for a lifelong connection with Christ and His Church through the sacraments and a vibrant, inviting community.
The Coordinator of Campus Outreach and Engagement provides critical leadership in advancing this mission through key student outreach and engagement efforts.
SUMMARY OF POSITION
The Coordinator of Campus Outreach and Engagement creates the strategic link between pre-evangelization efforts and ministry programs by cultivating a strong culture of hospitality and invitation within the Catholic Illini community, and by developing student leaders equipped for effective evangelization. The Coordinator of Campus Outreach and Engagement provides dynamic leadership to cultivate a growing, compelling, and engaging community of Catholic Illini on campus. The ideal candidate is a highly motivated professional leader who enjoys people, is mission-driven, and who possesses experience in cultivating relationships with students and staff.
QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
• Faithful Catholic in good standing and a vibrant sacramental life.
• Deep understanding of Catholic theology and the Church's call to missionary discipleship
• Bachelor's degree or higher, or equivalent professional experience, required
• An understanding of the uniqueness of ministry and size of the student population at the University of Illinois and St. John's Catholic Newman Center
• Commitment to the mission and ideals of St. John's Catholic Newman Center and the ability to articulate the mission.
• Demonstrated history of rallying, inspiring, and organizing others to take action, and of leading collaborative efforts to achieve unified goals and objectives
• Demonstrated history of seeing projects or tasks through to completion
• An ability to work flexibly around the schedules and seasonal breaks of college students, including availability to be present on some evenings and weekends.
• Ability to work through conflict and make decisions.
• Strong pastoral sensitivity and ability to accompany college students.
• A professional demeanor, including the ability to set appropriate personal boundaries.
• Effective public speaker
• Excellent verbal, visual, and written communication skills.
• Computer skills (Microsoft Office, word processing, and design program)
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
• Meet regularly with Director of Mission and Campus Ministry team to ensure pre-evangelization efforts are closely aligned with ministry goals
• Student Leadership
o Oversee student-led apostolates and groups within the Catholic Illini community
o Act as advisor for Catholic Illini Association student leadership team (RSO)
o Provides regular mentorship and formation to Catholic Illini Association officers to enable them for effective evangelization in alignment with overall SJCNC vision and goals
o Offers strategic support to student leaders
o Form and equip student leaders to engage the greater UIUC student body and reach students outside of Newman Hall and the Catholic Illini community.
o Plan and lead Student Leadership training the first week of August
o Grows a student-led hospitality program for the purpose of cultivating a warm and welcoming environment for visitors and students alike.
• Campus Evangelization and outreach
o Coordinator of Catholic Illini Welcome Week
Design and execute Welcome Week initiatives to introduce thousands of new and returning students to the Catholic Illini community
Galvanizes staff and student leaders across ministries for active engagement in Welcome Week events
o Spend intentional time on campus building relationships with students.
o Working alongside FOCUS missionaries to create environments where students encounter the gospel and respond to the invitation from Jesus
o Work closely with Newman Hall RD and RA team on evangelization and discipleship efforts in our dorm
o Accompany seekers, returning Catholics, and students at all stages of faith.
o Develops strong vision and implementation of evangelization efforts on campus
o Maintains a visible and relational presence on campus
o Create and implement creative outreach strategies
• Event Planning & Hospitality
o Ensure visitors and students experience radical Christian hospitality
o Develop and coordinate social and fellowship events that integrate students into sacramental life
o Collaborate with clergy, ministry and hall staff, and FOCUS missionaries to ensure events achieve shared goals and promote mission unity
o Develops regular outreach and fellowship events that unite and engage the entire Catholic Illini community.
o Proposes and implement win events
• Serves on committees, commissions and groups as needed.
• Performs other duties as assigned
COMPENSATION & BENEFITS
The anticipated salary range for this position is $40,000 - $50,000, commensurate with experience and qualifications. A comprehensive benefits package is provided. Salary flexibility may be considered for candidates with significant capital campaign and major gifts leadership experience. Relocation assistance and professional development support may be available.
