POSITION TITLE: ATHLETIC DIRECTOR

DEPARTMENT: ATHLETICS

FLSA STATUS: EXEMPT

REPORTS TO: ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL FOR STUDENT LIFE

St. Joseph's Preparatory is a Catholic, Jesuit, independent four-year college preparatory school located on the northern edge of center city Philadelphia. Founded in 1851, this highly selective school serves nearly 1,000 young men. Our goal is to help our students become men for and with others. POSITION SUMMARY:

Reporting to the Assistant Principal for Student Life, the Athletic Director is responsible for the development, management, coordination, and supervision of a competitive varsity athletics program with more than 100 coaches and approximately 750 student athletes. The Athletic Director supports the Catholic, Ignatian identity of St. Joseph's Preparatory School and maintains this identity to invigorate an athletic program in alignment with the School's mission and identified institutional priorities.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

MISSION,VISION AND JESUIT IDENTITY

Maintain an athletic program deeply committed to stewardship of the Prep's Jesuit mission, Catholic identity, and core values.
Provide visionary leadership, strategic planning, and policy development to maximize athletic resources, facilities, and personnel.
Center the athletic program around our Ignatian way of proceeding, intentionally developing student-athletes who embody the Graduate at Graduation profile both on and off the field.
Foster an inclusive environment that promotes holistic care (cura personalis) of each student-athlete.

INSTITUTIONAL COLLABORATION & ADVANCEMENT

Ensure the athletic program actively supports and integrates with institutional pillars, including Enrollment Management, Advancement, Finance, Academics, and Student Success.
Partner with the President's leadership team on enrollment and advancement initiatives, community building, and institutional opportunity and risk management.
Coordinate with Marketing and Communications to develop an engaging media presence in line with broader institutional goals.
Collaborate and communicates consistently with the broader Prep community including current parents, alumni, parents of alumni to encourage positive engagement and support.

PERSONNEL MANAGEMENT & COMPLIANCE

Recruit, hire, supervise, and evaluate the coaching and athletic staff in accordance with St. Joseph's Prep expectations.
Manage and train staff to ensure compliance with PIAA and PCL rules, and SafeSport guidelines to guarantee a safe, respectful environment.
Partner with the Human Resources department to ensure all staff clearances, background checks, and mandatory training modules are fully completed, updated, and logged.

OPERATIONS, FINANCE AND LOGISTICS

Forecast the financial needs of the Athletic Department and responsibly administers the approved annual operating budget.
Coordinate with all school stakeholders to design, manage, and communicate a comprehensive master athletic calendar.
Collaborate with the Facilities Department regarding the scheduling, maintenance, security, and equitable use of all shared athletic facilities and fields.
Oversee safe game-day operations, event management, transportation logistics, and spectator sportsmanship protocols in alignment with Prep expectations and PIAA/PCL policies.

STUDENT-ATHLETE HEALTH, SAFETY AND ELIGIBILITY

Collaborate with the academic administration on student health and success.
Support and collaborate with the director of students success, coaches, athletes and families in the college recruiting process.
Implement and enforce health and safety protocols, including concussion management, heat acclimatization, and Emergency Action Plans (EAPs) for all athletic venues.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS REQUIRED:

Bachelor's degree required; advanced degree from an accredited university is preferred.
Successful professional experience in the administration of an intercollegiate or high-performing secondary athletic program.
Commitment to excellence and the ability to work effectively with many different constituencies.
Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively at all levels within the Prep organization.
Demonstrated ability to effectively oversee multiple priorities, functions, and activities.
Demonstrated ability to manage an irregular work schedule, that includes nights, weekends, and travel.

MANDATORY EMPLOYMENT CLEARANCES:

(Employment is contingent upon the timely production of the following valid clearances as required by PA Law):

• PA State Police Criminal Record Check (Act 34)
• PA Child Abuse History Clearance (Act 151)
• FBI Fingerprint Background Check (Act 114) - Note: Must be processed through the PA Department of Education (PDE).
• Mandated Reporter Training (Act 126): Evidence of completed child abuse recognition and reporting training.
• Act 168 Disclosure Forms: Completion of sexual misconduct/abuse disclosure forms for all previous employers where the candidate had direct contact with children.
