Position Summary:

Archbishop Wood High School seeks a strategic, collaborative, and forward-thinking Director of Accounting and Finance to serve as a key member of the President's Leadership Team. This individual will oversee the school's accounting operations, budgeting, financial reporting, forecasting, internal controls, funds management, and long-range financial planning while supporting the mission and strategic vision of the school.

The Director of Accounting and Finance will work closely with the President, Principal, Board Finance Committee, Office of Catholic Education, and school leadership to help ensure the financial strength, sustainability, and operational excellence of Archbishop Wood.
This position requires a business-minded leader who can balance day-to-day accounting responsibilities with strategic financial analysis, process improvement, enrollment-driven budgeting, responsible funds management, and long-range planning initiatives that support the school's continued growth and advancement.

The successful candidate will understand that financial leadership in a Catholic high school is mission-driven, enrollment-driven, and stewardship-driven.

Essential Responsibilities

Strategic Financial Leadership
• Serve as a key member of the President's Leadership Team by providing financial insight, analysis, forecasting, and operational recommendations.
• Assist the President and Board Finance Committee in developing and executing long-range financial strategies aligned with the school's mission and strategic plan.
• Collaborate with school leadership on initiatives related to enrollment growth, retention, advancement, facilities, technology, staffing, and program development.
• Develop key financial and operational metrics to assist leadership in monitoring school performance and sustainability.
• Proactively identify opportunities to improve efficiencies, reduce costs, strengthen internal processes, and maximize financial resources.
• Assist in developing financial models tied to enrollment trends, tuition assistance, fundraising growth, and strategic initiatives.
Budgeting and Forecasting
• Lead the annual operating budget process in collaboration with the President, Principal, Board Finance Committee, Office of Catholic Education, and school department leaders.
• Prepare timely annual budgets and multi-year financial forecasts that align with the school's strategic priorities.
• Monitor actual financial performance against budget and provide monthly variance analysis and recommendations.
• Assist leadership in evaluating staffing models, tuition assistance needs, and resource allocation decisions.
• Support development of balanced operating budgets and long-range financial sustainability plans.
• Collaborate with Institutional Advancement leadership to ensure fundraising and development activity is accurately reflected in financial planning.

Accounting and Financial Reporting

• Maintain accurate accounting records in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), Archdiocesan policies, and established internal controls.
• Manage accounts payable, cash flow, banking relationships, reconciliations, and general ledger activity.
• Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and supporting schedules.
• Present financial reports and analysis to the President and Board Finance Committee.
• Coordinate preparation of the annual financial report and support all external audit activities.
• Assist with grant tracking, scholarship accounting, and restricted fund management.
• Work collaboratively with the Director of Institutional Advancement to properly record pledges, gifts, and fundraising activity.
• Ensure accurate financial reporting related to tuition assistance, scholarships, and enrollment-related funding.
Operations and Internal Controls
• Ensure compliance with all Archdiocesan financial policies and procedures.
• Strengthen and monitor internal controls and purchasing procedures to safeguard school assets and ensure operational transparency.
• Assist in developing requests for proposals and financial evaluations for major purchases and projects.
• Monitor insurance claims and collaborate with Archdiocesan personnel as needed.
• Maintain financial files and records in accordance with record retention policies.
• Assist in evaluating operational workflows and recommending process improvements where appropriate.
• Support a culture of accountability, stewardship, collaboration, and continuous improvement.

Funds Management

• Collect, deposit, monitor, and record school funds and financial transactions on a timely basis in accordance with Archdiocesan policies and school procedures.
• Monitor and reconcile all bank, investment, and cash accounts to the general ledger on a monthly basis.
• Ensure the proper management, documentation, and reporting of unrestricted, temporarily restricted, and permanently restricted funds in accordance with generally accepted accounting procedures.
• Work with Institutional Advancement and school leadership to ensure gifts, grants, scholarships, and donor-restricted funds are properly recorded, tracked, and used in accordance with donor intent and school priorities.
• Allocate the approved annual budget properly across fiscal periods and monitor monthly cash flow to ensure the smooth operation of the school.
• Provide timely cash flow analysis and recommendations to the President and Board Finance Committee to support responsible decision-making.
• Support transparent stewardship of school resources, including tuition receipts, fundraising proceeds, grants, scholarship funds, student activity funds, and other school-managed accounts.

Qualifications and Requirements

• Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required.
• MBA and/or CPA preferred.
• Minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible accounting or financial leadership experience preferred.
• Experience in nonprofit, educational, Catholic school, or mission-driven organizations is a plus.
• Strong financial planning, budgeting, forecasting, cash management, and analytical skills required.
• Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with leadership, boards, faculty, staff, and external stakeholders.
• Strong organizational skills with attention to detail and ability to manage multiple priorities.
• High level of integrity, professionalism, confidentiality, and accountability.
• Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Excel and accounting software systems required.
• Experience with financial modeling, operational analysis, and strategic planning preferred.
• Ability to think strategically while also managing day-to-day accounting operations.
• Commitment to supporting the mission and values of Catholic education.
