TITLE: Academic Success CoachDEPARTMENT: Academic Affairs
Classification (FLSA): Exempt, Salary
REPORTS TO: Director of Academic Success and Academic Dean
GENERAL DESCRIPTION: The Academic Success Coach (Coach) is responsible for providing students with the guidance and resources they need to succeed academically and thus persevere to graduation. The Coach is responsible for promoting academic resources on campus, reaching out to students in need, and connecting students with the support and services they need to succeed at the College. The Coach will act as a coach and mentor for students and work to inspire, motivate, and challenge them. The Coach will support Academic Affairs, student development, and retention services by focusing primarily on students in academic distress, while ensuring academic success strategies are available to all students in accordance with school policies and procedures.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Manages student mentors and volunteers.
CHIEF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Foster relationships to assist with persistence and completion by maintaining a caseload of students, including first time college students, transfer students, academic accommodation students, and students on academic warning and/or probation
2. Monitor progress of students in caseload with check-ins, scheduled meetings, proactive outreach and communication, and responding to students' questions, concerns, and needs in a timely and empathetic fashion
3. Conduct academic coaching through individual or group sessions that help students assess their own performance and develop academic success plans
4. Assist students in developing self-efficacy by identifying and overcoming obstacles that may be impeding academic success
5. Work with students to teach strong time management and organization skills; motivate them to practice self-regulation and take ownership of their academic success
6. Help students identify, develop, and implement learning strategies and study skills specific to course materials and their personal learning styles
7. Refer students to appropriate academic personnel and support resources; collaborate with others to monitor and accelerate the academic progress of the students referred
8. Build personal relationships of trust and support with the student body, particularly with freshmen, those with academic accommodations, and those on academic warning and probation
9. When not scheduled to meet with individual students, maintain active presence to allow students to drop in to discuss problems
10. Create and deliver presentations on academic success topics, including time management, study skills, learning techniques, note-taking, etc., as needed
11. Host events throughout the year to promote positive study habits, especially during midterms and finals
12. Serve as member of the Retention Committee that meets weekly
13. Report weekly to the Director of Academic Success and/or Academic Dean
14. Other duties assigned by the Department

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
1. Exceptional organization skills and attention to detail abilities
2. Relationship-building skills-ability to empathize and counsel students from diverse backgrounds and perspectives, as well as motivate them for success
3. Knowledge of study skills, learning styles, time management, editing (Turabian formatting), and student success strategies in higher education
4. Knowledge of basic ADA requirements
5. Perseverance-ability to overcome hurdles and achieve success no matter the obstacles
6. Self-motivation-ability to work with little supervision while achieving goals in an efficient and timely manner
7. Understanding of a Catholic liberal arts education
8. Excellent communication skills and the ability to communicate with students, parents, faculty, and staff in a timely, professional, and empathetic manner
9. Bachelor's degree required (Christendom College graduate)
10. Desire to work for a Catholic apostolate
11. Friendly, cheerful, approachable, and professional disposition
PHYSICAL / MENTAL / EMOTIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
Must be able to make quick decisions.
Must be calm in stressful situations.
