Job Description

Summary:
A Director for Religious Education (DRE) administers faith formation programs for adults and children. Most importantly during the sacramental preparation years and OCIA/ OCIC preparation for new Catholics or those that have fallen behind in their faith. The DRE works with the pastor to assist parishioners in coming to know the mind and heart of Jesus Christ through programs of catechesis for faith formation including, but not limited to, the reception of the sacraments.
Primary Function
The DRE provides not only the day-to-day direction for the Religious Education functions of the parish, but the long-term planning for the faithful. This includes oversight of the catechesis classes, adult formation (OCIA), bible study programs and Vacation Bible School.
Essential duties and responsibilities
• Classes grades 1-8 - evaluate and develop curriculum as need to include programs/events/retreats
• Plan annual calendar of events and review with Pastor and calendar coordinator
• Sacramental preparation for Sacrament of Reconciliation, Communion and Confirmation for Children, to include OCIC & OCIT to include all paperwork
• Adult Formation OCIA - to include all paperwork
• Event Planning-Opportunities for prayer and worship, and activities that encourage a relationship with God and the church community. This will involve parents and families as well, recognizing the crucial role parents/families play in the development of the faithful.
• Maintain expenses within an annual budget for the ministry
• Supervise the religious Education Admin Assistant and approx. 50 volunteers
• Oversee the student registration process
• Recruit and train catechists
Qualifications
A candidate for this position in an active member of the Roman Catholic Church in Good standing ( with no impediment to the reception of the Sacraments). To perform this ministry successfully, an individual must e able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
Education and/or experience
Preferably, a bachelor's degree in theology, religious studies, or related field, and at least three years or experience in administration or religious education ministry. Other degrees and certificates programs or pastoral experience seriously considered. Must be willing to obtain a Master Catechist Certification as this is a Diocesan policy.
A minimum of 3 years of experience in parish-based ministry is preferred; experience in leadership roles and experience in parish-based faith formation programs considered.
Required knowledge, skills and abilities

• Understands and follows diocesan policies and guidelines
• Is collaborative and skilled in working with a parish staff
• Able to work independently when necessary
• Able to run meetings and utilize public speaking skills
• Has good listening skills, strong interpersonal and communication skills
and is prudent in dealing with confidential matters
• Is able to communicate effectively both orally and in writing/email
• Excellent computer skills, can keep up with and update technology to benefit the ministry
• Input and maintain data using PDS and Microsoft programs; Experience with PDS (Parish Data Software) is a plus
• ability to organize, prioritize, and delegate
• ability for long range planning and vision for the future of the parish
This is 40 hours a week position, with flexible hours during the week, regular office hours and requires weekend hours at times during the year.
