POSITION SUMMARY
The Custodian is responsible for keeping all Saint Augustine-Saint Francis Xavier parish facilities clean, sanitary, and well-maintained at all times. This is an active, physical role. The primary mission is straightforward: Buildings secure, people safe, the grounds are clean, the buildings look good, and nothing falls through the cracks.
The Custodian works under the direct supervision of the Lead Custodian and supports all parish operations through consistent, high-quality cleaning, event setup, and grounds maintenance. The Custodian assists the Lead Custodian on facilities projects as directed and must be available for weather emergencies including snow removal.
CORE RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Daily Cleaning & Sanitation
• Clean and sanitize all restrooms in the church, rectory, lyceum, and parish office buildings daily
• Sweep, mop, and vacuum interior spaces throughout all parish buildings
• Empty and replace trash and recycling receptacles; prepare for collection and disposal
• Clean and maintain entryways, lobbies, stairwells, pews, and common areas
• Wipe down surfaces, counters, and frequently touched areas, including walls.
• Restock paper products, soap, and consumable supplies in all restrooms
• Ensure the overall appearance of the buildings is clean, neat, and presentable at all times
2. Grounds & Exterior Maintenance
• Sweep and maintain exterior walkways, steps, and entrances for all parish buildings daily
• Remove trash and debris from parish grounds, including drains and downspouts
• Perform weed removal on sidewalks around and between all buildings
• Monitor the cleanliness of tree pits, fences, and the surrounding property
• Assist with basic seasonal exterior upkeep and landscaping tasks as directed
3. Mass & Event Setup / Breakdown
• Prepare the worship space before Mass and clean and reset it after each Mass- Mass Schedule: Monday-Thursday at 9:00 AM. Funerals and Weddings are scheduled throughout the week and require the same setup and reset process.
• Set up chairs, tables, and equipment for parish events, meetings, and religious education programs
• Break down and store all equipment after each event
• Check the Operations Board task group for any setup assignments from the Lead Custodian
• Assist with preparations for special liturgical seasons, celebrations, and funerals as directed
4. Snow Removal & Weather Emergencies
• On-call requirement: This position is on call for snow removal seven days a week, as necessary. Availability during winter weather events is a firm requirement of the role.
• Perform all aspects of snow removal: shoveling, clearing stairs and entrances, operating a snow thrower/blower where applicable, and spreading salt at both Saint Augustine and Saint Francis Xavier
• Must be available on short notice to ensure safe access to all buildings; schedule flexibility for weather emergencies is expected
• After-hours and emergency snow removal responses will be compensated through overtime pay or flex time, arranged in coordination with the Lead Custodian and Pastor
• Coordinate snow removal responsibilities with the Lead Custodian
5. Supply Monitoring & Storage Management
The Custodian is the day-to-day eyes on supply levels and is responsible for flagging needs to the Lead Custodian.
• Monitor supply levels of cleaning products, paper goods (toilet paper, paper towels), soap, and other consumables used daily across all buildings
• Replenish bathroom dispensers and common area supplies from storage throughout the day as needed - do not wait for supplies to run out before restocking
• Communicate to the Lead Custodian whenever storage inventory is running low and an order needs to be placed; notify in advance, not after a shortage
• When supply orders are received, stock storage areas properly and confirm to the Lead Custodian that all items have been put away correctly
• Maintain all assigned equipment and tools in proper working order; report any equipment issues to the Lead Custodian promptly
• Keep supply closets and storage areas organized, labeled, and accessible at all times
6. Minor Facility Support (When Directed)
• Perform basic tasks when assigned: replacing light bulbs and batteries, clearing a stopped toilet, tightening hardware, and similar minor items
• Report repair needs, damage, or maintenance issues to the Lead Custodian promptly
• Assist with moving furniture, equipment, and supplies as needed
• Assist and fill in for other maintenance personnel when needed
7. Monday.com Task Management
The Custodian's Monday.com responsibility is focused on their assigned task group in the Operations Board.
• Check your assigned task group in the Operations Board daily for tasks assigned by the Lead Custodian
• Update task statuses promptly upon completion
• When you observe damage, hazards, or maintenance needs, notify the Lead Custodian directly - by phone or in person - rather than logging items independently; the Lead Custodian will log reported issues on the appropriate board
8. Special Projects & Lead Custodian Support
• Support the Lead Custodian on facilities projects and tasks as assigned
• Assist with contractor or vendor visits as needed
• Handle any other duties as determined by the Lead Custodian or Pastor
