Job Description
POSITION: Director of CommunicationsOVERVIEW: The Sisters of St. Francis of Assisi have a story worth sharing-and we're looking for a creative, strategic communicator to help tell it.
The Director of Communications plays a vital role in shaping how the congregation communicates its mission, ministry and Franciscan values both within the congregation and with the wider community. This position brings together storytelling, media relations, publications, digital communications and creative content to connect people with the Sisters and the work they carry forward.
From a compelling story in Troubadour magazine to an engaging social media post, an internal newsletter, a media opportunity or a special publication, the Director of Communications ensures that the Sisters' message is clear, authentic and engaging across every channel.
This is an opportunity for an experienced communications professional who loves finding and telling meaningful stories-and who wants their work to contribute to something larger than themselves.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Writes and oversees the production of the monthly email newsletter for the congregation
2. Works with human resources staff in the production of monthly employee email newsletter
3. Manages editorial staff of the biannual Troubadour magazine; develop themes with the leadership team and writes articles for the magazine; organizes and oversees production schedule
4. Emails weekly "Hotline" informational email to Sisters, Associates, and department leaders
5. Photographs all congregation events and as requested; maintains digital photo files
6. Assists advancement department as requested with creative input and editing of written materials
7. Supervises Creative Services Specialist
8. Directs external messaging for the congregation
9. Develops and maintains media relations
10. Maintains congregation website and social media platforms
11. Other duties as assigned
REQUIREMENTS:
• Education and/or Experience: Bachelor's degree in journalism, public relations, or communications required. Experience working with media outlets to place editorial and advertising content, arrange interviews, and provide background information about The Sisters of St. Francis of Assisi. Experience in creating social media content with knowledge of various platforms. A minimum of five years of experience preferred.
• Skills/Knowledge/Abilities:
o Exceptional written, verbal, organizational, and interpersonal skills
o Ability to write and produce a variety of written materials (newsletters, magazine, flyers, signage, special projects as needed)
o Ability to coordinate multiple projects at one time
o A basic knowledge of video production
o Ability to advise congregation leadership with regard to communications and public relations decisions, and special messaging needs
o Knowledge of current media trends and new technologies, including developments around the use of AI
o Excellent relational skills and openness to collaboration with Sisters and staff of other departments within the congregation
o An understanding and respect for the mission, ministry, and values-based culture of The Sisters of St. Francis of Assisi
o Basic knowledge of advancement/fundraising marketing is preferred, as this position works closely with the advancement team in the creation of donor materials, as needed
o Basic photography skills
