Job Description

The Archdiocese of San Francisco is seeking its next Superintendent of Catholic Schools.

Canonically established by Pope Pius IX on July 29, 1853, the Archdiocese of San Francisco has provided Catholic education in the Bay Area for 170 years. Today it serves some 500,000 Catholics in 88 parishes across San Francisco, San Mateo and Marin counties.

The Archdiocese's Catholic schools include 56 elementary schools, 21 preschool programs and 15 high schools, four of which are Archdiocesan. Nearly 16,000 students attend archdiocesan and independent Catholic schools, served by 2,900 professional staff members.

The ideal candidate will be a faithful, practicing Catholic and missionary disciple who will lead the renewal of faithful, integral Catholic formation and education, animated by the Church's mission to make disciples of all nations. The Superintendent is appointed by Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone and serves at his discretion as his liaison to the Catholic schools. The role sits on the Archbishop's Cabinet, reports to the Vicar General and Moderator of the Curia, and leads the Department of Catholic Schools. Working alongside principals and pastors, the next Superintendent will set a long-term strategic vision built on the four pillars of Catholic schools: Catholic Identity, Academic Excellence, Leadership and Governance, and Operational Vitality. The Superintendent will articulate the value of Catholic education, address affordability and changing demographics, and recruit and form mission-aligned school leaders and teachers. Candidates should be joyful, collaborative leaders and persuasive communicators, with experience in strategic planning, budget and fiscal management, and Catholic educational or organizational leadership.

Candidates are expected to be available to assume the responsibilities of the position by July 1, 2027, or sooner.
