Job Description
Youth MinisterDescription
The Youth Minister will develop a ministry vision aligned with the parish's overall vision and form a team of leaders through which the vision will be accomplished. Though already engaged in various ministries throughout the parish, our teens are hungry for an intentional community of peers who are deepening their faith, sharing it with others and having a meaningful impact on the world.
Accountability
The Youth Minister is a member of the parish staff who reports directly to the Pastor and Director of Parish Life and is responsible for:
• Attending regular staff meetings;
• Participating in staff planning, and integrating youth into the parish vision and strategy
• Seeking staff input and serving as a resource to parish staff on issues related to youth.
• Recruiting, training, and inspiring volunteers to support youth ministry.
Responsibilities
Vision and Organization
• Promote a comprehensive vision of youth ministry for the parish, in line with the Parish Plan for Renewal and Total Youth Ministry.
• Form a leadership team of adult and youth volunteers.
• Coordinate the recruitment, training, supporting, and evaluating of a team of volunteers, catechists and adult leaders in youth ministry programs;
• Facilitate and coach the team of youth leaders responsible for planning, implementing,
and evaluating youth activities;
Faith Formation
Develop a systematic and intentional plan for adolescent catechesis that utilizes creative formats, settings, and timeframes; is rooted in Scripture and Catholic tradition; and enables young people to articulate the teachings of the Catholic faith outlined in Total Youth Ministry, including but not limited to:
• Spiritual Growth: Opportunities for youth to explore their faith, deepen their relationship with God, and develop a strong Catholic identity.
• Social Development: Creating and maintaining a welcoming and supportive community where young people can build positive relationships with each other, adult leaders, and the wider church community.
• Personal Growth: Encourages the development of leadership skills, communication skills, and a sense of responsibility and service to others.
• Intentionality: Intentional programs designed to help young people grow closer to Jesus Christ and live out their faith in the world.
Community & Family
Develop programs and promote opportunities for adolescents and their families to live out their Catholic faith.
• Promote the importance of giving back to the local community through service projects and social action initiatives.
• Provide pastoral care and referrals for youth and their families when needed;
• Foster the involvement of young people in the life of the parish, including serving on parish committees, being involved in parish activities, and serving in liturgical ministries
• Provide opportunities to engage and partner with parents in supporting them in their efforts to form their children in faith;
• Maintain an environment of inclusion, trust, and acceptance that embraces young people and families from different cultural, racial and ethnic backgrounds;
• Research and organize the implementation of a summer work camp experience.
Qualifications
• Practicing and passionate Catholic, faithful to the teachings of the Church;
• Strong calling to work with youth;
• Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience in youth ministry, religious education, religious studies, or theology or related areas (coursework in pastoral ministry, catechesis, and spirituality will be recognized) or working towards a degree;
• Knowledge of current youth culture, issues, and trends;
• Good organizational and planning skills;
• Experience facilitating large and small groups;
• Excellent interpersonal skills;
• Strong verbal and written communication;
• Ability to read, prepare, and manage a budget;
• Proficiency in the use of technology for administration, communication, and
presentation, including computer programs (especially Microsoft Office), Internet use, social
media;
• Availability to work during and outside regular business hours as required, including
evenings and weekends
Relationships
o Pastor & Director of Parish Life-immediate supervisor;
o Parish Staff-close cooperation and communication;
o Parish Community-when requested, attend meetings of the Pastoral Council to provide a youth ministry report; and collaborate as appropriate
o Parents and Parishioners-regular communication and seek input as appropriate;
o Professional organizations that provide networking with other Youth Ministry Leaders
